NEW DELHI: Amid reports of the US electric car major, Tesla putting its plan to sell its products in India on hold, Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday said the government was never in favour of any firm manufacturing its cars in China and selling here. He said the Indian car makers have the capability to produce world’s best electric cars.
新德里:在美国电动汽车巨头特斯拉搁置在印度销售产品的计划之际,联邦道路交通部长尼廷·加德卡里周六表示,印度政府从不支持任何公司在中国生产汽车然后在印度销售。他说,印度车企有能力生产全球最好的电动汽车。
Speaking at an event after witnessing a vehicle crash test in Pune, Gadkari said, “We have all automobile brands here. It doesn’t matter if one or two of them are not here. We told a company that manufacturing in China and selling cars here won’t work (China mein banakar yahan bechoge, aisa nehin jamega). If you want to come here, you manufacture in India. I am confident that our vehicle manufacturers can make better vehicles than others. We have young talented designers and they are doing better.”

In a candid admission, the minister said that he listened to the automobile manufacturers and dropped the proposal to make it mandatory for trucks to have air-conditioned cabins for their drivers. “I agree I listened to you and withdrew the idea of the air-conditioned cabin in trucks. In other countries, there are fixed driving hours for drivers. But here they drive for even up to 18 hours. They drive in inhuman condition,” he said.

it may be a desirable vision to make in India, but why to reinvent wheel and waste precious time in roll out of any technology which is available elsewhere... one more problem is that most of the Indian manufactures have a tendency to compromise in quality and they get away with poor design. also cost of manufacturing, reservation sucks and ultimately higher cost is passed on to Indians only that too for inferior technology..

It was a DUMB idea to cancel mandatory air condition cabin for Truck Drivers, who drive in 110 degree heat, and on top of that, Mr Gadkari is trying to justify it. However I do admit that he is a great Minister and has transformed the infrastructure and I do admire him immensely .

Problem will come when Indian manufacturers attempt to make cheapest products and compromise with safety and quality. On the other hand some manufacturers jack up prices by adding unnecessary luxury features unrelated to safety and quality.
