NEW DELHI: Four person onboard a Pawan Hans chopper that crashed into the Arabian Sea near ONGC Sagar Kiran rig on Tuesday morning have lost their lives. Three of them were ONGC employees. The brand new Pawan Hans Sikorsky chopper had nine persons, two pilots and seven passengers, on board.

The chopper (VT-PWI) had taken off from Juhu for Sagar Kiran rig. The survivors are learnt to have been shifted to Mumbai's Nanavati Hospital.

这架直升机(VT-PWI)从Juhu起飞前往Sagar Kiran钻井平台。据悉，幸存者已被转移到孟买纳瓦蒂医院。

In a statement, ONGC said the chopper had made an "emergency landing" around 11.45 am on Arabian Sea, one nautical mile away from ONGC offshore rig Sagar Kiran. The oil major activated a contingency plan and the Indian Navy and Coast Guard were informed.

"ONGC vessels near the location were mobilized for search and rescue operation.... one person was rescued by life boat launched from ONGC Rig Sagar Kiran and four persons were rescued by ONGC stand by vessel Malviya 16," ONGC said.

印度石油天然气公司称：“印度石油天然气公司的船只在事发地点附近进行了搜索和救援行动....其中一人被Sagar Kiran钻井平台上的救生艇救起，四人被待命的Malviya 16号船救起。”

The Navy also deputed its vessels and chopper while Coast Guard diverted its vessels and an aircraft.

"Four persons rescued by Navy chopper were brought to the base unconsciously and taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, they could not survive. ONGC deeply mourns this tragic loss of lives.... An enquiry has been instituted," the oil major added.

A team of senior Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) also rushed to the site. Sources say the chopper that crashed is a brand new Sikorsky S-76D.

The regulatory team has completed its preliminary assessment of accident under DGCA's director (air safety-western region) Sanjay Bramhane. Pawan Hans had recently taken on lease six Sikorsky S-76D helicopters from Milestone Aviation Group (Milestone). Sikorsky is a subsidiary of US aerospace major Lockheed Martin.

在印度民航总局局长(航空安全-西部地区)桑杰·布拉罕的领导下，监管团队已经完成了对事故的初步评估。帕万汉斯公司最近从里程碑航空集团(Milestone)租借了六架西科斯基S-76D直升机。西科斯基是美国航空航天巨头洛克希德·马丁公司的子公司。

I have worked in ONGC vessels as a contract officer for more than 31 years and the company maintains highest level of safety. In 1999 Westland Helicopters were grounded due to safety issues. I'm sure corrective action will be taken once an enquiry is conducted.

It is good that our wise Modi government has increased the insurance compensation for such accidents, which are toutine in ONGC, so that loss to family is minimum.

Many companies have employed a policy of not allowing more than 2 senior executives or those of operational importance flying together.Isn't ONGC applying same to itself!!

This shows the poor level and quality of safety training and practice by the company and the people. This choppers are able to float and people are supposed to be trained to escape from the helicopter safety. That is why all are trained with Helicopter Under Water Training (HUIT). But we people never take safety training seriously.,We should change our attitude towards safety and safety training like other international oil companies (Shell, Exon, BP etc.)
