NEW DELHI/THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As chaos reigns in Sri Lanka, India sought to maintain a safe distance from the Lankan political establishment with the government saying on Sunday that it stands with the people of the island nation as they seek to realise their aspirations for prosperity and progress through de ocratic means and values, established institutions and constitutional framework.

Speaking in Thiruvananthapuram, foreign minister S Jaishankar said the Indian government had always been supportive of Sri Lanka and it was “trying to help” the neighbouring country through its present economic crisis. “They are right now working through their problems, so we have to wait and see what they do. It is a very serious crisis, and it has been develo over the years. Answers to Sri Lanka are in Sri Lanka,” he said.

“They have to overcome their financial crisis on their own. We have been their biggest supporters, but they will have to find the solution to their crisis. I believe they have already begun discussions on it. They have to restructure their policies to lessen debts and resolve the issues with lenders,” he added.

Throughout the economic crisis that has gripped its Indian Ocean neighbour, and while extending assistance worth $3.8 billion, India has tried to ensure that it's not seen as favouring any one political party or group over another. India has maintained that it will be guided by the best interests of the people of Sri Lanka expressed through de ocratic processes and also strongly denied rumours that former PM Mahinda Rajapaksa had been given shelter by India.

India on Sunday handed more than 44,000 metric tonnes of urea under a credit line extended to Sri Lanka.

Scenes at Sri Lanka Presidential palace are surprising and disturbing in a peaceful and beautiful small Buddhist Iseland country. It does not augur well for Democratic Governance in future. Storming of Presidential palace by protestors has set a dangerous precedence for future Govts. This should not have happened, Peaceful protests are justified even in front of Presidential Palace,, but crashing into Palace then indulging into fun is not acceptable in de ocratic country. One Sri Lankan TV reporter rightly described as,"Scenes resembled Talibani take over of Kabul ". Many anti social elements and inimical elements to Sri Lanka Buddhist country must have inflitrated into such an act to disturb harmony and peace. The fault also lies with the President Rajpaksha, he should have resigned earlier when there was maassive people upsurge against him, worst that he fled. There is need for serious introspection among the people. Mere change in theGovt will not solve the economic crisis, there are many global and domestic factors, and many small countries are also facing such economic crises Only wisdom must prevail in meeting such challnges..

unfortunately India is surrounded by thankless neighbours though we never tried to be their big brothers. When ever they have crises, they run to India but moment they are okay or get someone as big brother,, they kick us. It is better we wait and watch.

I am sympathize with Sri Lanka for the current crises that they are undergoing and wish them well . However, India should not provide them aid using Tax Payers hard earned money. Simply , because over the years Sri Lanka has pursued an anti India Policy, they have not treated Indian Fishermen well and on many occasions shot and killed them. Many of their political leaders have been arrogant towards India. Aid should only be given to Neighbors who are friendly to India.
