With the recent $280 billion U.S. CHIPS and Science Act signed off by President Joe Biden, the competition between the U.S., China, the European Union, and other East Asian countries to shore up their semiconductor capabilities has become increasingly fierce.

CGTN spoke to Nie Yongzhong, founder and chairman of semiconductor company FATRI Group based in Quanzhou, southeast China's Fujian Province, to find out how this global chip-making race is going to impact Chinese enterprises in this sector.

It won't be easy for China, but it has such as strong ability and people to focus on develo IDM that I'd put money on China producing 50% of its own chips within 5 years, then go on further to 60% and 70%. But it also needs the rest of the world.

The Chips Act will not make the manufacturer go back to the USA, because in the USA doesnt have sufficient engineers, and high labor cost. The real purpose is to take hostage of the Chip makers.

Big challenge for China since most of those chip manufacturing countries are under US jurisdiction but i believe China will make a break through with its on-going investment in chips R&D.
