Chinese 'spy ship' arrives in Sri Lanka despite India, US concerns

NEW DELHI: The controversial Chinese ship Yuan Wang 5 reached Sri Lanka's Hambantota port on Tuesday morning.

新德里：周二上午，备受争议的中国“远望5号”抵达斯里兰卡汉班托塔港。

Yuan Wang 5, that China claims is a research vessel, has been dubbed a "spy ship" by security analysts. The Pentagon says Yuan Wang ships are operated by the Strategic Support Force of the People's Liberation Army.

中国声称这是一艘科考船，安全分析人士称其为“间谍船”。五角大楼说，“远望”号属于中国人民解放军战略支援部队。

There were apprehensions in New Delhi about the possibility of the vessel's tracking systems attempting to snoop on Indian defence installations while being on its way to the Sri Lankan port. US too had raised concerns owing to the ship's surveillance capabilities.

The ship was allowed to dock on the condition it will not carry out any research while in Sri Lankan waters, port officials said following consultations with India, the United States and China.

Sri Lanka said no rotation of personnel would take place during the call and the Lankan government was requested to provide the necessary assistance by the Chinese Embassy in Colombo.

The security and cooperation in the neighborhood are of utmost priority in handling the issue of the Chinese vessel Wang Yang 5, the Lankan foreign ministry said in a statement.

The Chinese ballistic missile and satellite tracking ship was earlier scheduled to arrive on August and remain at the port until August 17 for "replenishment."

However, the Sri Lankan foreign ministry requested the Chinese embassy here last week to postpone the vessel’s visit following security concerns raised by India.

The Chinese embassy in Colombo sought urgent talks with Lankan authorities after this.

On August 12, the Chinese embassy applied for clearance for the new dates - Aug 16 to 22 - “for replenishment purposes of the vessel”.
