This week Qualcomm announced new 4nm wearable chips called the Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 and W5+ Gen 1, Sony and Minecraft's Mojang said no to NFTs, and China's SMIC chip fab shipped 7nm bitcoin miners with a process they copied from TSMC, potentially overtaking the US & EU.

The funny thing was the idea of EUV ASML currently banned to sell to China the original patent was bought from a Taiwanese (Chinese) guy after he got rejected trying to sell to Japanese Canon's Etching process department (then the largest Etching company in the world before ASML take the lead)

From what I heard the US chip bill is not aimed to boost chip competition but rather the other way around. Because the contents basically are,
"If you build factories here in the US we'll give you billions of $$$. But you must promise not to invest in China for the next 10 years".
I don't know about you but that does not sound like promoting competition to me. Also chip factories take tens of billions at least to build so I'm not sure the subsidies would be attractive enough to keep away from Chinese market, either.

SMIC is unlikely to have developed 7nm technology, because it requires EUV lithography equipment from Netherland with US components and IP, many specialized materials from Japan, other production equipments from US and design software from US. Once SMIC procures equipments, materials and design software then they need to develop process expertise to produce 7nm semiconductors. Did China also develop manufacturing equipments, materials, and software? LOL!

Well it's not like they weren't already making decent stuff. The hi silicon chips that Huawei used were pretty darn good. Weren't quite able to match the latest Qualcomm or Apple silicon, but they were close.
