BAREILLY: Bringing back chilling memories of the Budaun dalit sisters' death case in 2014, two minor sisters, also dalit and aged 14 and 17 years, were found hanging from a tree outside a village in Nighasan area of UP's Lakhimpur Kheri district on Wednesday evening.

The mother of the girls said that her daughters were "kidnapped by three bike-borne men at around 3pm on Wednesday and three hours later they were found hanging from a tree in a cane field".

After villagers saw the bodies, they gathered at the spot to protest against the administration in large numbers, forcing police to deploy personnel in the area to control the situation.

Superintendent of police (SP) Sanjeev Suman, too, rushed to Nighasan to take stock. Meanwhile, IG (Lucknow range) is expected to reach the village soon.

Police said that the girls' family "didn't file any complaint until their bodies were found". SP Suman told TOI, "We have sent the bodies for autopsy to ascertain the reason of death. However, as of now, we cannot rule out the possibility of suicide as there were no physical injuries on their bodies."

To recall, two minor sisters, cousins, were found hanging from a tree in a village in Budaun on May 27, 2014. It led to massive protests in the village as the girls' family had alleged that their daughters were raped and murdered. After several botched investigations by the local police, the case was later handed over to CBI which, too, was later accused by many of carelessness. It later submitted a report that said the sisters had "died by suicide", a contention the families have refused to accept to this day.

On January 31, 2019, the bodies of two other minor girls, 14 and 15 years old, were found hanging in mysterious circumstances from an electricity pole in Pasgawan area of Lakhimpur Kher. Police subsequently said it was a case of "honour killing".

A state which is the base of Samajwadi Party whose leader Mulayam Singh Yadav says “Boys are boys, they make mistakes, why hang them for rape”, enhanced the confidence of rapists and shot down the efforts of those men and women who have worked hard to keep women safe. Literally Uttar Pradesh police and judicial system are incompetent in ending this menace of crimes against women, because of insensitivity and outdated police law and judicial procedures. Add to that is we Indians still follow casteism, discriminate and treat lower caste Hindus with contempt, inhumanity and humiliation. We are all responsible for this. Not just the system, but us as Indians.
