NEW DELHI: In some straight talk with Russian President Vladimir Putin, PM Narendra Modi told him Friday that this wasn’t the era of war, while also underlining the significance of de ocracy, dialogue and diplomacy. Modi also urged Putin to take the initiative in addressing, as he put it, some of the biggest problems develo countries were facing in the form of food, fuel and fertilisers scarcity.

新德里：周五，在与俄罗斯总统普京的直接对话中，莫迪总理告诉普京，现在不是战争时代，同时强调了民 主、对话和外交的重要性。莫迪还敦促普京采取主动，解决发展中国家面临的一些最大问题，如粮食、燃料和化肥短缺。

Modi’s remarks, delivered publicly and in his first in-person meeting with Putin since Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine, are expected to assuage the feeling in the West that India has aligned itself with Moscow on the Ukraine issue by not just not condemning Moscow but also by increasing its crude and other imports from Russia. India has always maintained that one of the pillars of its Ukraine position has been its initiative to remain in touch with both sides to promote dialogue and diplomacy and bring the hostilities to an early end.

这是自俄罗斯在乌克兰发动军事行动以来，莫迪首次与普京会面，并公开发表了上述讲话。预计莫迪的讲话将缓解西方的感觉，即印度在乌克兰问题上与莫斯科站在一起，不仅没有谴责莫斯科，还增加了从俄罗斯的原油和其他产品的进口。印度一贯认为，对乌克兰立场的支柱之一是主动与双方保持接触，以促进对话和外交，早日结束敌对行动。

In his opening remarks before the meeting, Modi thanked not just Russia but also Ukraine for the evacuation of Indian students from Ukraine.

在会议开始前的讲话中，就从乌克兰撤离印度学生，莫迪不仅感谢了俄罗斯，也感谢了乌克兰。

Putin, who spoke before Modi, acknowledged India’s position on Ukraine and said Russia will do its best to stop the conflict as soon as possible. Putin added though it was Ukraine which had refused to continue negotiations and declared it wanted to achieve its goals by military means.

普京先于莫迪发表讲话，他承认印度在乌克兰问题上的立场，并表示俄罗斯将尽最大努力尽快停止冲突。普京补充说，尽管是乌克兰拒绝继续谈判，并宣布希望通过军事手段实现目标。

Putin also noted that India’s import of fertilisers from Russia had grown 8 times after Moscow ramped up supplies on India’s request. Putin said trade was growing and large-scale joint projects in the oil and gas sector and nuclear power were being implemented.

普京还指出，在莫斯科应印度要求增加供应后，印度从俄罗斯进口的化肥增长了8倍。普京表示，两国贸易正在增长，石油、天然气和核能领域的大型联合项目正在实施中。

India has enabled Putin's misadventure for 7 months through it's mild responses, and such advice comes late in the day. Putin took no one's advice before starting his war and is not going to listen to any advice now.
