Chennai woman tortured in UAE sends video, seeks help from CM MK Stalin

CHENNAI: Police are looking into the complaint of a 37-year-old Tondiarpet woman who in a video requested chief minister M K Stalin to free her from the cramped house in Dubai where she has been forced to stay and work for 20 hours a day.

The video is part of the complaint lodged with the Tondiarpet police by James Paul, seeking help to rescue his wife Bhuvana James Paul. An FIR is yet to be registered. The woman's family also alerted AIMS, an NGO, whose co-founder Kanya Babu said she had sent an e-mail to the Indian Embassy officials in the UAE on the matter.

In the video, accessed by TOI, Bhuvana says she was staying with her husband James Paul, a daily wager, and their daughters Lycina, 16, and Lydia, 14, when she decided to go to Dubai. She approached a Choolaimedu-based agent and paid 10,000 for a medical examination. In February, she was sent to Dubai with the promise of 150 dinars (3,330) a month as wages, but was paid only 102 dinars (2,264) a month, she says.

Bhuvana says her houseowner beat her up when she insisted on getting some rest. "I was not treated for the injury and forced to continue to work." She says she used her phone in secret in the bathroom at night to make a video of her plight and send it to her husband.

Dinar is a Kuwait currency not a Dubai (uae) currency so this article is bit confusing.

I have been in UAE for 25 years however as per what she claims she does not even know where she is . She says she is paid in riyal means she is most probably in KSA and not dubai . Secondly please contact Mr Jaishankar on his Twitter handle and she will get immediate help . God be with her .

Absolutely, as per some comments, there is definitely something fishy here. Wages of merely 3000 rupees?? This isn't right. Labourers/ maids get close to atleast 10000 inr or more in India. Harassing is obviously not right but something is wrong in the complaint. Hope things will be sorted soon.
