NASHIK: At least 11 people were killed and several others injured after a private luxury bus caught fire after colliding with a truck on Aurangabad Road in Maharashtra's Nashik city on Saturday early morning.

Resident deputy collector Bhagwat Doifode confirmed the accident and the number of deceased people.

Over 20 others were injured in the accident and they have been taken to civil hospital for treatment.

The incident occurred at around 5.20am near Hotel Mirchi on Nashik – Aurangabad Road when a Mumbai-bound private bus coming from Pusad collided with the Pune-bound truck coming from Dhule head on.

The Nashik fire brigade received a call at 5.30am after which three fire tenders were pressed into service. The locals and police reached the spot after the accident and shifted the injured to the hospital.

Nashik police commissioner Jayant Naiknavare said that there were 30 passengers in the Mumbai bound bus from Yawatmal.

There are many reasons for excessive road mortality in India. Lack of traffic rules enforcement, lack of vehicle road worthiness checks on public and private vehicles, lack of liability insurance for public transport operators are some of key issues that can and should be fixed. If the transport company had adequate liability insurance, there would be no need for the government to use public money to comensate the victims.

Private bus operators are always are ending up in accidents. Yet no action is taken against them. Most of the drivers are over worked or in habit of slee in early hours. We never hear about the operator being jailed or punished. Unless the law gets serious about these accidents, there will be no solution.

I am not sure if seat belts would have been helpful in cases where a fire starts after the collision. I have a feeling the seat belts will delay/hamper immediate rescue efforts. At least half of india does not know how to put on and then unfasten seat belts.
