Absolutely!
I had no idea what China was like until I visited. It completely altered my perception of the country.
Since then, I’ve studied China in much greater detail. And I did so without relying on Western media which, frankly, is completely unreliable. I realized that Western media constantly lie about China.
The country is magnificent. The urban areas far surpass what you find in the West. Los Angeles, New York City, Toronto, London, Paris, Berlin, Rome…these great cities don’t hold a candle to China’s greatest cities!
China’s government receives the highest marks in the world! This is according to the Edelman Trust Barometer, as well as a study by Ash Center at Harvard Kennedy School.
China is a wonderful role model for all nations…

No, for the most part I didn't, and I will explain you why.
I travelled China by land from far East, Shanghai, to far West, autonomous regions of Sichuan, crossing and stop by several provinces, and then heading south East again to Hong Kong.
A total of one month, mostly by train and car. I've seen so many places, ate so much food, met so many people. I’ve seen from luxury places to the poorest areas, from the most modern buildings to the most untouched nature.
Why it didn't change my idea of China?
Simple!
Because I wasn't biased to begin with. I had studied chinese culture and history at school already, like most kids here, and then on my own, with an open mind.
I had tried their food in autenthic restaurants, tried to learn their recipes, I made friends with chinese people, I learnt some language and I did lot of research before traveling there.
It's not hard to understand most of the American misconceptions about China are completely fake and ignorant.

please do not let politics be the reason why you’re ignorant
(let’s just try and put politics aside for now cuz the focus is on China and it’s cultural history, how much it has improved over the years ,how they have their modern innovations and still remember their beautiful past.)
i went to China in 2017 as an 11 year old kid who didn’t have very good impressions of the country prior to that. as a Cantonese,(edit:I’m a Singaporean Chinese,my grandfather came from guangdong so I’m of Cantonese descent:) )I grew up watching Hong Kong dramas and mainland China would forever be portrayed as a poor village or a rural area.this was how I’ve always viewed the country,as a kid,I also heard about those “stories” where you get abducted easily in China, there are many scammers in China and how their public toilets do not have doors to them, how their people are mean, rude and nasty.and then baby me trusted whatever the adults said.
i went to China with my school, not my family.yes we went to tourist attractions and fancy fancy restaurants and luckily enough,we visited a school and a car factory. it was beautiful.the tourist attractions we visited were mostly historical relics and there was a different beauty to it,sure,it’s not modern beauty but it’s unique in a certain way,and there were many fascinating stories of the people from the older days. it’s a country with 4000 years of history,a country with a really really fascinating and complicated history,so many so many stories of people of the past and how great China was back in the days.
it’s beautiful,at least in the eyes of mine
as a Chinese,it wasn’t very hard for me to finally see a different side to China 5 years ago. as a young girl,I was taken aback by everything.
it has that very peaceful thing to it,beauty in peace!!
what I’m trying to say is that China is not what we all remember them to be.the country has really improved a lot and it’s very very modern now !! while kee the beauty of their history in them, they’re advancing in technology as well!! as they embrace their culture, they’re moving forward.
there’s literally no one using cash nowadays, all using their e wallets, yes even the elderly and the young children.there’s technology everywhere(I’m not gonna show u pics cuz of copyright and all that hehe)like you go the supermarket and you do the self check out,you stand in front of the machine and wait for them to recognise you through your eyes and then deduct money from your wallet.you look at all the robots serving you, being your tour guides.
this is the amazing part of China, and I saw the beauty in their history myself when I was there and started being interested in their culture, thus knowing about the technological advancements.
Well yeah, everybody else out there probably don’t want to visit China because of their country’s propaganda and all those politics, resulting in people being biased.yea it’s hard but all I ask of you is to keep your mind open and before coming to judgements, take a look at the country yourself, visit China yourself and you’ll probably be mindblown (cuz I don’t know which culture has a history as long as theirs and also because of your originally biased mindset:))
let’s not allow ourselves to be ignorant just because the government, the media, the people say this and that okay? allow yourself to be educated properly by the locals or your own eyes instead, your eyes are probably more reliable than the governments’ words

As an American, some of us are taught that there’s no place like home. The thing is there’s a whole world out there to explore and understand and much of it is not made up of despair and derelict as is often the implication by those that embody a deep nationalist bend.
I was tickled to death when my 17-yo son came to me to tell me about a particular airport in Singapore he learned about in school, which is not a mainstream school.
This isn’t a one off. Go to Taiwan. Japan. China. South Korea. Dubai for heaven’s sake.
Face it fellow Americans, in terms of infrastructure and innovation of what the future will look like, we are sorely, sorely falling behind. Being critical actually means you care enough to improve the place you call home. Whatever blockers are in place that prevent us from leading the world besides in military scope and rapacious greed, they need to be limited or removed completely.

After traveling in China, I have a deeper understanding of China.
When I visited China, one thing that surprised me was that it was completely different from what the Western media told me, that China was a beautiful place. Almost everything I heard about China growing up in America described how ugly he was. Before I went I thought there were dark clouds in the sky everywhere. But when I actually came to China, I was shocked at how beautiful he was and how breathtaking the scenery was in many places. Not only that the Chinese people are more kind American and everyone was always willing to speak English with us and very friendly when I tried to talk to them in Chinese. Quite frankly many of the people I met in China were more friendly than many of the people back home.

I am a Hong Kong-American, raised with your typical western values of generally casting suspicion on anything Chinese.
As a graduation gift, I was put on a charity trip to participate in a Hong Kong-funded cataract surgery drive in mainland China. I saw mainland Chinese cities, towns and villages, from the best to the poorest, from the connected eastern coast to the remote northwestern provinces, and the aggressive infrastructure drive in between all of them. This was at the turn of the millennium, and the positivity and hope really struck my impressionable teenage heart at the time.
Yes, much of it was staged, as most large charity events tend to be. But it was very real.
Yes, I was relieved to be back in Hong Kong with my comforts, but the hardship that I saw in China was mostly optimistic. And the biggest city I went through on that trip, Guangzhou (Canton), was still develo (polluted and chaotic) but felt like a place that would come of age soon. Of course it’s very developed, clean and mature now as countless YouTubers have shown.
Most importantly, it taught me that China is not a monolith—it is very varied and very human, a billion’s worth of them, each wanting a better life and looking to the government to provide the tools and environment to achieve it. I will never agree with all of its ways (nobody should fully agree with any country—that would be absurd), but I can now appreciate and respect our differences.

Absolutely. I first visited in 2013 and within hours it was clear that about 50% of what I’d heard about China was incorrect. I visited again in 2019 and it was up to about 95%.
China is incredible. It really gets under your skin and I literally can’t wait to get back and experience more. I’ve been to i’an, Chengdu, Chongqing, Yichang and a few other places and would jump at the chance to even just go back to those cities.

I first went to China forty years ago in the early 1980s and went with no preconceptions (or just plain no idea). There was very few foreigners in China at that time as the country was in the early throes of reopening to the world; for business so to speak.
It was a very different China then, not modern with freeways, cars and sprawling hi- rises. I was doubly fortunate to be working far away from the cities and in the country..
The Chinese people were unfailingly polite but you had to uphold your end of the bargain also. Loved the green curtain that descended on the countryside in spring after a cold muddy winter. Made countless friends, some who will always be special.
I knew nothing (period?) about China when l first went and so developed an opinion rather than changed an opinion. We worked alongside and froze or sweltered together, and camped together,; even shared a few drinks together!
It's difficult not to form a high opinion of people when you're treated with respect (something nearly All western politicians could think about) and for myself anyway l wish China and the Chinese people all the very best. I was always extended courtesy in China and it is courtesy to acknowledge that fact back.

Yes. I was completely blown away by the China I saw. My perception of China is no longer colored by the Western media. I would encourage all to visit and see for themselves how clean and beautiful, the country is. My best vacation so far!
