莫尔比吊桥倒塌：被告称事故是“神的旨意”；4人还押候审至11月5

MORBI: The Morbi Nagar Palika was aware of the risks of reopening the suspension bridge and allowing a large number of people on it, given the allegedly slipshod manner in which the Oreva Group had executed the renovation project, chief municipal officer Sandeepsinh Jhala reportedly told police.

"We asked him if he was aware that the contractor hadn't taken permission to reopen the bridge (five days before it collapsed). He (Jahla) admitted no nod had been sought or given," a senior police official said.

“It (bridge collapse killing 135 people) was ‘bhagwan ki ichcha’ (God’s will),” a manager of the Oreva company that was responsible for the maintenance of the 140-year-old bridge, Deepak Parekh told Chief Judicial Magistrate M J Khan during court hearing where the accused were produced for remand.

Parekh is one of the nine people arrested after the bridge crashed on October 30. While requesting for remand of the accused on Tuesday, assistant government pleader Harshendu Panchal argued that the contractors who had assigned the bridge’s renovation job were ill-qualified. “We have also submitted before the court that bridge flooring was replaced by the Oreva group but the cable was not replaced. It could not take the weight of the changed flooring,” Panchal told media persons.

During renovation, the wood of the flooring was replaced with aluminium sheets, a primary forensic report submitted to the court in a sealed cover stated. The court was also apprised that the bridge was suspended on cable sans maintenance like oiling and that the cable was also rusted. The court sent Parkeh, Dinesh Dave, Prakash Parmar and Devang Parmar on police remand till November 5. The FIR was also added with IPC section 336 and 337.

All over the world Aluminum sheets are used for flooring suspension bridges. aluminum is more durable and long lasting material ideal for flooring bridges and the like. The main issue is overcrowding. At any given time only certain number of people can walk on the bridge, these structures can not carry indefinite weight.

Under Indian constitution anyone accused is innocent until proven guilty. If he is accusing God, then it is up to him to prove that God is guilty. Otherwise the court will have to assume that God is innocent.

Suspension bridge is a very complex structure. Morbi Bridge is quite long and unusually narrow. Indian engineers have virtually no experience in suspension bridge design. It requires understanding the nonlinear behavior of the structure. Only an expert can pin the real cause. Then only our experience will improve.
