The Russia-Ukraine war has thrown up multiple lessons for the militaries across the world. However, it holds special lessons for the IAF which has a large fleet of Russian origin fighters. ThePrint’s  Deputy Editor Snehesh Alex Philip looks at some of the lessons from the ongoing war.

I think this war is a wake up call for all the millatry strategists and generals. I think the armed personnel should be not only trained in combat but also technology and decentralised fighting so that small no of forces can do the right thing at the right time instead of going through the bueracracy during combat missons.

This war has shown that conventional platforms like Airplanes, surface ships and tanks are very vulnerable to precision guided modern weapons. A single infantry soldier can shoot down an airplane or kill a tank and a mobile launcher can destroy a large surface ship. This is era of smart weapons and not numbers.

Thanks for an excellent presentation. Electronics,advanced radar,shoulder fired missiles,anti-radiation misiles,swarm drones,cost of weapons,networked aircraft- all these are necessary. I am jeptul that IAF and the Ministry of Defence are drawing the right conclusions and taking effective steps to implment them early. Great video. If Indian planners are smart, they'd use some of the funds previously designated for more Russian aircraft purchases to develop and produce drones of all types on massive scale. There isn't a better object lesson for the soundness of this approach than Ukraine.

Thanks for the assessment team print.... however, we have to remember, that whilst SU30 is Russia origin, however the electronics have been outfitted by Israeli, Indian & French electronics..It gives me a little comfort....Indian GOV and the Airforce has lot to achieve, thanks to the current government, atleast we have made a little progress, else DRDO was considered a white elephant.

I am not an expert but we also have to realise that the terrain in which IAF operates is different. So choices on weapons are made by the user.

Agreed that there is a need to upgrade to unmanned equipment or robots but the I am sure the services know what’s best for them.

You also should mention the leadership difference. Ukraine had a leader who refused to hide or flee, and is continuously visiting the front lines exhorting his soldiers despite danger to his person. Hail Zelensky for that. Putin on the other hand was isolated and remote -- not connected with his troops. Even when meeting with his generals, he was seen sitting on the other end of a very long table!

I completely agree with the fact that high-end Russian equipment in Indian forces must be reduced drastically. However, Ukraine is able to withstand the onslaught because they are using literally the best technology supplied by the US and Europe. That gives them a huge edge. The same comparison can't be made w.r.t. IndVSPak/IndVSChina. Nobody is going to help them if war breaks out between India and them. We need to wake up but we need to keep a calm head and not scramble around in a hurried dizzy.
