'Don't need to hit major cities': Putin cites Hiroshima & Nagasaki bombings in chat with Macron

Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly referenced atomic bombings in Japan during a conversation with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron. A report in UK's Daily Mail says that Putin expressed his view that the bombings – which triggered the Japanese surrender and the end of the Second World War – demonstrated that ‘you don’t need to attack the major cities in order to win. Putin's comment is said to have  'alarmed' Macron who saw it as a major hint by the Russia president's intent on using a tactical nuclear weapon.

据报道，俄罗斯总统弗拉基米尔·普京在与法国总统埃马纽埃尔·马克龙交谈时，提到了日本的原子弹轰炸。

Japan did not surrender straight after the horrific atomic bombing of its 2 cities, it surrendered a few weeks later, after the USSR entered into the battle against them, and some historians (from the west) believe it was the USSR who made Japan surrender, if I remember rightly.  That might be what was meant by the comment.  (Might be, I don't know).
