The population of Mumbai, also known as India’s ‘Maxmum City’, grew by some eight million people, roughly equivalent to the size of New York City, in the last 30 years. But Mumbai’s housing, transport, water and waste management infrastructure have not kept pace, with around 40 per cent of the city’s 20 million living in slums. These crowded collections of ramshackle buildings often have no regular supply of water and power or proper sanitation.

From my experience being Indian is that, newly wedded are expected and pressured by society to give a birth to a child or children.  The strongest myth behind this, is that children are seen as a there is strong bound in a family, or couple won't split up (which is true, most family live for society).

People really care about giving birth rather than financial needs and plan.

But the core problem is the rising cost of living in cities like Mumbai, housing isnt affordable.  Software engineers in Mumbai live in slums and rent controlled housing(chawls) because they cant afford the rent. While few rich people own half the city's properties. There are thousands of vacant apartments in Mumbai owned by rich indians who live overseas, this drives away middle class people with lower income.

Indian government needs to boost tier 2 cities like indore, kanpur, bhopal, lucknow, ahmedabad, vadodara, rajkot, chandigarh, patna, raipur, bhuvaneshwar, cuttack, vizag, coimbatore etc so that people have more cities to migrate to and not everyone jumps into mumbai.

Indian politicians have really failed to do so.
