BENGALURU: BJP’s double-engine governments see India’s need for speed as “ambition” and scale as its “strength”, unlike their predecessors who treated the first as a “luxury” and the other as “risk”, PM Narendra Modi said Friday after flagging off southern India’s first Vande Bharat Express and inaugurating Terminal 2 of Bengaluru airport. He also unveiled the 108 feet, 218 tonne bronze statue of Bengaluru founder Kempegowda at the airport (see photo).

“The governments that exsted in India prior to 2014 had a mindset that led to slow development. We changed that. Unfortunately, they (alluding to Congress) still believe in the old school of thought,” PM Modi said at a rally, pointing out that the world was already in awe of the strides made by the country in the digital payments space.

印度总理纳伦德拉·莫迪周五在印度南部为首条范德·巴拉特特快列车和班加罗尔机场2号航站楼揭幕后表示，人民党双引擎政府将印度对速度的需求视为“野心”，将规模视为“力量”，而他们的前任政府将前者视为“奢侈品”，将后者视为“风险”。他还在机场为班加罗尔之父肯佩高达108英尺高、218吨重的铜像揭幕。

The PM said increased air connectivity and new airport infrastructure like Bengaluru’s own T2 would play the crucial role in all future development. “India is the fastest growing market in air travel today. Before 2014, India had 70 airports. The numbers have more than doubled now. These airports will increase the business potential and job opportunities for our youth.”

The city’s new terminal, which Modi described as “more beautiful than what I had seen in photographs”, is likely to be operational by the end of the year.

莫迪总理表示，增加空中航线和新机场基础设施，比如班加罗尔的T2航站楼，将在未来的发展中发挥关键作用。“印度是目前全球航空旅行增长最快的市场。2014年之前，印度有70个机场。现在这个数字已经翻了一倍多。这些机场将提高年青一代的经商和就业机会。”

On the newest Vande Bharat Express that connects Chennai, Bengaluru and Mysuru, the PM said the train was a symbol of the country leaving its “days of stagnation” behind. “India is modernising and beautifying its railway stations. Our aim is to make more modern railway stations and develop infrastructure for better connectivity.”

Modi said 400 new Vande Bharat and Vistadome trains would redefine the country’s largest commuting network, besides ensuring faster cargo services with dedicated freight corridors and last-mile connections with broad-gauge lines.

Inaugurating the statue of ‘Nadaprabhu’ Kempegowda, Modi said the structure would inspire Indians to build their identity globally as leaders. “He (Kempegowda) is remembered as a visionary who always put people’s welfare above all else. I am honoured to inaugurate the ‘Statue of Prosperity’ in Bengaluru.”

Modi said that despite economic activity taking a hit during the pandemic, Karnataka under a BJP government attracted investments worth Rs 4 lakh crore and recorded the highest FDI last year. “Investments were made in IT, biotechnology and defence manufacturing,” he said. “Around 25% of aircraft and space research equipment and 70% of the nation’s defence requirements are fulfilled by Karnataka.”

Speed is necessary, but not at the cost of passengers safety. Track renewal and conversion is at same pace for decades. Overcrowded, filthy compartments, toilets, dirty linen,no drinking water, unhygienic food, passengers safety are common in train travel along with free passengers like cockroaches and rats .
