China has seen its fortunes rise from a closed agrarian society 40 years ago, to a modern high-tech society where even the most remote inhabitants are synced up to the latest apps. However, either by apathy or hostility, Western perceptions have not appreciated this peaceful development story. They see something amiss. Either China is backward, or China is a competitor, rarely a friendly equal partner. What is China really like? Bill Brown, has lived in China for 30 years and had a front row seat in China's opening up and development. He drove around China twice, in 1994 and 2019 to even the most remote areas, and saw how people’s living standards have improved dramatically.

中国已经从40年前的封闭农业社会上升到现代高科技社会，即使是最偏远的居民也能同步使用最新的应用程序。然而，无论是出于冷漠还是敌意，西方的观念都没有欣赏这一和平发展的故事。他们看到了一些不对劲。要么中国落后，要么中国是竞争对手，很少说中国是友好的平等伙伴。中国到底是什么样的？

What is the root cause of Western misunderstanding and distrust of China? I'm afraid it all comes down to racism and xenophobia.

Asians and, in particular, Chinese are superficially too different from the white Caucasian peoples in the West. It is the nature of man to fear and hate that which he does not understand.

It was the Europeans and their descendants (Americans, Canadians, Australians) that dominated the world in the last several centuries. Dominated economically and militarily through colonialism and imperialism.

They now view Asians with suspicion because they assume Asians are like themselves with an expansionist mindset. And while this was true of Japan and the Mongols, it has never been true of China.

For nearly all of the last 2,000 years, China and India were alternately the largest economies and most prosperous nations in the world. But China has never been expansionist like the Romans, Ottomans, Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, British and Americans were.

Moreover, in the last four decades, China has shown no signs of expansionism. China has not fought a single war!

China has only sought to protect its territorial rights.

So from this racist attitude arose Western propaganda which was prevalent in our Western media. This indoctrinated Westerners, not only in Europe but throughout the Western world, to distrust China. That's the reason for the high unfavourability ratings.

西方对中国的误解和不信任的根源是什么？恐怕这一切都归结为种族主义和仇外心理。

亚洲人，尤其是中国人，表面上与西方的白种人不同。人的天性是害怕和憎恨自己不理解的。
