The impact of the China-Laos rail link can only be fully realized when the link to Thailand and consequently to Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore is realized as this will definitely shorten delivery time between China and the ASEAN region; an advantage as we move towards the middle of the 21st Century. Even today with the rather slow train between Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia, it was much faster than ship. Though it is noted that road transport seems to be preferred though a well organized and well managed rail freight should be more competitive than road transport whose periodical management costs are seldom taken into consideration by most countries.
