NEW DELHI: Few had doubted that BJP would win in Gujarat. But few had expected it to be as humongous as it turned out to be, with the BJP steamrolling not just Congress, which had shown remarkable resilience, but also the freebie-wielding AAP.

The tornado has bettered the best-ever score -- 149, that Congress achieved under its astute giant Madhavsinh Solanki in 1985 -- notched in Gujarat since its formation in 1960.

It is a testament to the popularity of PM Narendra Modi, which remains undimmed across the country but takes on an emotive dimension in his home state. The tremendous pull of the man was the single-most important factor in the feat BJP has pulled off.

The stellar performance has further widened the gap between Modi-led BJP and its rivals. Congress, which showed resilience even during Modi's chief ministership, has finished a miserable second, while AAP’s high-decibel challenge fizzled out.

BJP’s overwhelming performance in Gujarat as well as its strong performance in Himachal augur well for the party in the runup to the coming state elections and the 2024 LS polls. In Modi’s unrivalled popularity, it has a weapon that all its rivals put together cannot match. It has also put together a powerful platform, with development, welfare, nationalism and Hindutva among its scaffoldings. The G20 presidency and the global attention focused on India because of its economic recovery post-Covid can be a powerful gist for a narrative to be sculpted around ‘capable and powerful’ leadership.
