KULLU: AAP, which contested the assembly polls in Himachal for the first time and had portrayed itself as the third and the best alternative to the two-party system in the state in the run up to the elections, met with a crushing and a humiliating defeat.

Out of the 67 candidates it had fielded, none could open account, including former Lok Sabha member Rajan Sushant, who had contested from the Fatehpur constituency in Kangra district. All the AAP contestants lost their security deposits as not even one could secure minimum one-sixth (16.7%) of the total valid votes and led to forfeiture of their security deposit. The party didn't leave any impact even in constituencies bordering Punjab, where earlier this year in March it had broken the hegemony of SAD and Congress.

After an initial push in the early phase of campaigning, when party chief Arvind Kejriwal did some road shows in the state, the party surrendered midway and lost its focus completely. In the final phase of campaigning, while BJP and Congress were holding rallies all over the state, AAP was conspicuous by its absence.

In its 'poll guarantees' for the state, AAP had promised unemployment allowance to the jobless youth and free pilgrimages to the elderly. It also promised to improve the health and education facilities and make Himachal a corruption-free state. None of it struck a chord with the electorate.

AAP is still a very young Party, essentially made up of common citizens, who are putting welfare of fellow citizens (so called freebies), above the welfare of profits and capitalism. They don't have the organizational or financial backing like those enjoyed by the other two major parties. They do not have the financial firepower to fall back on, in lieu of performance and accountability. AAP has to perform to woo voters.
