'Over 7,000km range': Why India's latest Agni V missile trial sends strong signal to China

NEW DELHI: With the successful trials of the nuclear-capable Agni V ballistic missile earlier this week, India has now developed the capability to strike targets beyond the range of 7,000 kilometres.

Sources in the defence establishment told news agency ANI that the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has been able to reduce the weight of the Agni V missile by replacing steel content with composite materials.

"The weight reduction that has been achieved in the missile system is beyond 20 per cent and if the government wants, the nuclear-capable strategic missile can go beyond 7,000 kms," they said.

Agni V, which is considered India's most formidable missile, brings even the northernmost part of China, including capital Beiing, within its strike envelope.

The latest trials come just days after fresh flare-up between Indian and Chinese troops in Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang sector along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

The sources said the decision to test the missile for its new maxmum possible range will have to be taken by the government.

The Agni V provides India with stronger deterrence against China, which has a huge nuclear arsenal and missiles like the Dong Feng-41 (12,000-15,000-km) that can hit any Indian city.
