India's Covid numbers at record low amid rise in global cases

Covid-19 cases have generally been rising around the world since early November but the numbers continue to steadily decline in India. In the week that ended Sunday, the country recorded just 12 deaths - including zero deaths on three of the days - the fewest since daily Covid fatalities started being reported in March 2020.

Cases detected in India during the week fell to 1,103, again the lowest weekly number since March 23-29, 2020, when the first nationwide lockdown was imposed. The week gone by (December 12-18) saw a 19% dip in cases over the previous seven days.

Covid cases have been steadily declining in India for nearly five months.

The 12 deaths that were reported last week were the lowest casualties recorded since March 16-22, 2020, when the pandemic was yet to cause fatalities on a daily basis in the country.

In contrast, many countries in Asia, Europe and elsewhere have seen a surge in cases in recent weeks. As per worldometers.info, the seven-day average of global cases has been on the rise since November 2, when 3.3 lakh cases were recorded.

Currently, Japan is reporting the worst surge of the virus in the world, with over 1 million fresh cases recorded in the past seven days, a rise of 23% over the previous seven, as per the worldometers website that tracks Covid numbers. The country has logged over 1,600 deaths during the week, up 19%. South Korea reported over 450,000 fresh cases last week, up 9% from the previous seven days.

Cases have also been surging in Brazil, Germany (which had seen a big rise in October as well), among countries that reported over 1 lakh new infections in the past seven days. The numbers remain big in France (3.9 lakh) and the US (2.5 lakh), although infections there are currently declining.
