With its advantages in automobile manufacturing and preferential tariff policies, Thailand is emerging as an important destination for China’s new energy vehicle makers to begin exploring international markets.

The ATTO 3 is the first electric vehicle launched by BYD in Thailand, with a price of 1,199,900 baht ($33,638). The car went on sale in Thailand on October 10 this year, and November 1 was the first day when it began to accept reservations.

“The team outside a BYD exhibition hall has been lined up since the early hours of the morning. Because there were too many buyers, the store staff started issuing numbers. The ATTO 3 is very popular because it is beautiful, affordable and subsidized,” a Chinese resident of Bangkok told Time News.

Chinese automobile brands that are also popular in Thailand include SAIC MG and Great Wall Motor. SAIC is one of the first Chinese car companies to successfully enter the Thai market. Since 2012, SAIC has set up joint ventures with Charoen Pokphand Group, a well-known Thai enterprise. In 2014, MG, a brand owned by SAIC, entered the Thai market. SAIC MG sold 31,005 cars in Thailand in 2021, ranking among the top 10 auto brands in the country.

Simple. They are not. Honda and Toyota have 55% of the car market (2021 figs) with MG at 4.1 - not much of a take over is it? All that is happening is the Chinese, mainly MG, are replacing Ford, who no longer make cars, and expensive unreliable European brands (Germans). They will eventually find their place in the market coz they are cheap and offer good warranties, but they do not have a reputation for reliability, innovation, modern specs or customer service. They are not taking over anything.

Chinese cars are becoming more prevalent because of their price point, but you also hit the nail on the head when you mentioned GWM manufacturing cars from CKD (Complete Knock Down) kits in Rayong, so they can bypass import taxes. It also allows them to export from Thailand instead of China, freeing up a factory for the Chinese local market. Having said that, some of the Chinese cars are still hit and miss; anything from the SAIC group (MG, Maxus/LDV, Roewe aka Rover) should be avoided due to build quality, rust issues, lack of reliability and inefficiency. They're also trying to price themselves along mainstream manufacturers. For me, i'll let someone else do the Chinese car experiment.

I've seen gear heads be reluctant to like EV's but they are the future and also the fastest production cars currently available. The Rimac Nevera quarter mile Time is 8.58 seconds. The model S Plaid does it in 9.75 seconds. No stock gasoline cars even come close to those numbers. By the year 2035 all major manufactures will be all electric and internal combustion cars will be a novelty.
