With China on their radar screens, India & Japan to conduct first-ever joint air combat exercise

印度和日本将进行首次联合空战演习  

NEW DELHI: With a belligerent China figuring high on their radar screens, India and Japan will conduct their first-ever air combat exercise next month in a significant development in their steadily expanding military ties.

The exercise `Veer Guardian’, to be conducted at the Hyakuri and Iruma air-bases in Japan from January 16 to 26, will see India deploying four Sukhoi-30MKI fighters supported by two C-17 Globemaster-III strategic lift aircraft, one IL-78 mid-air refueler and around 150 IAF personnel. Japan, in turn, will deploy F-2 and F-15 fighters, among assets, for the exercise.

“The Veer Guardian exercise will further strengthen bilateral defence cooperation and military interoperability, as also enhance tactical air combat skills of the two sides,” an official told TOI on Thursday.

On the bilateral front, India and Japan already conduct the `Dharma Guardian’ exercise between their armies and the ‘JIMEX’ between their navies. Since 2015, Japan has also become a regular participant in the top-notch India-US `Malabar’ naval combat exercise , which now also includes Australia.

India and Japan have now also operationalized their military Reciprocal Provision of Supply and Services Agreement. India has such reciprocal military logistics pact with countries like the US, Australia, France, South Korea and Singapore.

Japan is a pacifist nation. Doing exercises in the ocean does not bother China. If Modi had guts, he would invite US to do war excercises with Indian troops in the Tawang area. That is what will shake up China and it will stop trying to salami slice Galwan valley and Tawang area. Exercises with any country including Australia have no impact on China.
