It's both a challenge and an opportunity for prime minister Narendra Modi, who takes on issues including Russia's war in Ukraine, the continuing effects of the pandemic and growing food and energy insecurity.

I must say I am critical of Modi, his fervent supporters, the nationalists (including the RSS - who I am always criticising) and the mistreatment of certain minorities but I think India needs someone who is tough and willing to stand up for itself. I fully support India's decision to remain neutral in the Ukraine War, to not cave to Western demands to pick a side in a war that is not theirs to fight. This applies to the rest of the Global South. Remain neutral because this is not your war. I think India's decision to be more hard line after the Ukraine War began has made people gain a little more respect for the country because it's not a "yes man". They're obviously front and centre about the fact that they care about their interests only (most of the time) and I think that made the West realise you're going to have to treat them as an equal if you want to conduct business with them.
