Is 1,000 yuan a lot of money in China?

Imagine $145 USD being enough to eat for 1 month for a single person based on eating 3 non-home cooked meals a day. Full meals with meat and vegetables.
For example, dumplings in China. 15 dumplings for 15RMB = $2.20. While in western Chinese restaurants, you are paying $7-$9 dollars for 8–10 dums.
Lo mein (Noodles). A full plate in china cost 12–14 RMB= $1.75 to $2. While in western Chinese restaurant, you are paying $8-$10.
The Chinese in China have done a tremendous job to keep “basic” necessities low priced.
In general, if your making 10KRMB = $1500 per month. You can live a really decent life in China. Meanwhile $1500 in USA is a huge struggle just paying rent.
So you can say 1000 RMB is a lot but at the same time not a lot but because of the low price “basic necessities “ , it feels like it’s a lot. Until you start buying luxury goods, like a good pair of brand name jeans for 400rmb. Which honestly, I find it funny because A pair of Jeans can almost feed the same person for half a month.
If only more countries put more effort to control the cost of living..the world will be a much better place. I hope China continues on this path. Increasing wages but keep “basic” necessities at a low cost so all human beings at any level (Low to high class) can afford to have a roof over their head, food, basic clothing and public transportation and medical. Nobody should have to choose between food or rent.

Yes, of course! It's equivalent to a girl's breakfast money and pocket money for two months. This girl is my daughter. She is in the fifth grade of primary school this year, excluding the extra expenses on Saturday and Sunday. According to my estimation, she has saved more pocket money than her father at present.

Is 100 yuan a lot of money in China?
Just like in the US or elsewhere, it depends on who you are.
But for the middle class. No. A Chinese streamer who sings gives away 500 yuan every half hour. As Michael said, it’s $15 USD. You can get a meal for $10 yuan or less in China.
For the poor, it can be a lot of money. For the wealthy, it isn’t even enough to be pocket money.

This is a fun question to answer.
It’s roughly $140 USD. But in China, the money goes a long way. So, here in the Southern Section along the coast, you can pretty much do any of the following with it…
Go to the movies about 8 times.
Or…
Register for a movie VIP card, and go 28 times.
You can set it aside and buy a bus card; whether a physical card, or a QR registration code for your cellphone….
1000 yuan = 1000 bus trips
And, the same thing is true in Shenzhen with a subway, only it’s slightly more expensive, depending on your route. Let’s just call it double the price for simplicity sakes.
500 Subway trips.
Subway and bus not to your liking, how about DD or a tax?
66 local rides
33 longer rides
How about eating?
250 breakfasts
66 stand-alone lunches
14 dinners
How about drinking?
100 bottles of beer at a BBQ
200 bottles of beer at at a store
10 bottles of medium priced wine
1 bottle of Beijiu
How about smoking?
142 packs of cheap cigarettes
How about hair styling and cuts?
Man = 60 trims
Woman = 2 hairdos
Dog = 4 sessions
Let’s talk about rents…
Apartment rent = not enough.
Parking rent = About 6 months worth
Electricity cost = about two months

Yeah, if you own 1,000 yuan in China, that’s a big deal, you can serve your friend with a big meal.

YES! As everywhere in this world, always, always, the 1% own the 99% of the resources and money. The majority of Chinese are really really poor. 1000 Chinese yuan means 100 days of food supplies for them.

1,000 yuan is nothing, it is below the minimum salary in Beiing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Tianin, Naning, iamen, Qingdao, etc. big and middle cities .People in those above cities make 6,000- 30,000 or more.
There is no any city paying that little now. Even very small and poor cites offer minimum at least 2,000 +.
In SH, BJ,SZ, GZ etc. big cities, to rent an one bedroom small apartment is as high as 5000–10,000 . But in some small 4 tier cities 1,000 yuan is enough to rent a 1bedroom small apartment. you also need some money for foods.

It depends on how you want to live. 1000 yuan used to be a big deal. Put in the current context, in Shenzhen the minimum wage is 1,800 yuan per month. So, 1000 yuan is really not a lot in a big city like Shenzhen. In the rural area of the poor province like Guizhou, 1,000 yuan could probably last about a month for food and essentials.

this really depends on which city you are in and what kind of life you want.
say it’s in my hometown shenyang which is a second or third level city in china, 1000 yuan is ok amount of money, that is equivalent to 5 times eating out (medium level restaurant), half month rent (2 bedroom ordinary apartment), 20 movies tickets (not imax though) or a month food expense (if you are frugal enough)
but if you stay in beiing shanghai shenzhen or other first level cities, these number has to be halved.
and if you choose to live in small towns near shenyang, these number could be doubled or tripled, once i went back to my mom’s hometown, qingyuan, a name which is even unfamiliar to me, my mom bought a whole bucket of rice cakes with only 10 yuan, i was totally blown away.
and again, that depends on how you wanna live your life, if you choose cheap food everyday, yeah, 1000 yuan is a lot of money, but if you like fresh high-quality fruits or meat, 1000 yuan is only like 4 big durians or 5 kilo strawberries, one king crab or a box of sea cucumbers. it’s really just a little money.

1,000 Yuan is about USD160.
In 2021, the median per capita disposable income of residents in China was 29,975 yuan, an increase of 8.8 percent, and the median was 85.3 percent of the average.
In 2021, per capita, disposable income in Shanghai amounted to around 78,027 yuan, up from 72,232 yuan in the previous year.
This is the average amount that an average Chinese in China spends in about 12 days and in Shanghai he spends that in 4.5 days remembering that he can get twice that value in China than in the US. It is not that much now compared to 5 or 10 years ago.
1,000 Yuan is not a lot of money in China. China is a very big country, that amount may be quite a lot in a remote country village but, certainly, a small amount in a big city like Shanghai.
In summary, that is the reason China attracts a lot of tourists there every year because it is not that expensive. The goods are also quite cheap. It is getting richer by the day because its economy is growing every year. It will definitely be more expensive to visit or to buy Chinese goods with each passing year.

About 600 million Chinese still live on 1000 yuan a month. The thing is, you have to factor in purchasing parity. In rural areas where rent is very low a 1000 yuan a month exstence is perfectly doable and regarded to be comfortably above the poverty line, which is less than half that. That said, no, 1000 yuan is not a lot of money. A teacher probably earns about 2500 a month, plus benefits.
