I am An Indian and I really want to visit Thailand. But I have heard that Thais really Hate Indians and really not want to see us in their country. Is it really true? Is it that bad for Indians there?

As other have pointed out, “hate” is much too strong a word. The situation is more subtle.
An Indian friend of mine once asked exactly the same question before he decided to visit Thailand. He grew up in the Indian-Muslim community of Kinshasa (Congo) before he immigrated to Canada. He is very Canadianized, so his behaviour is quite unlike the average Indian from India. Even so, he had heard about “this Thai thing against Indians”, so he was a bit worried. After his trip, he gave me a mixed report. He told me some Thais occasionally ignored him or were slightly rude, while others were incredibly friendly. He told me that Northern Thais were the friendliest (but many non-Indian visitors have said the same thing).
The fact that the Thai language has a somewhat insulting slang term reserved for brown-skinned foreigners — “Khaek”— is an indication of the Thai ambivalence toward Indians, Pakistanis, etc.
In Thai, khaek usually just means guest. If I invite you to my house, you are my khaek. But historically, South Asian visitors to Thailand — traders, Buddhist or Hindu religious proselytizers, immigrants, and nowadays tourists — were also viewed as ‘guests’ in the kingdom. And everyone knows that a guest should never overstay their welcome. Calling South Asians khaek is a typically Thai way to express their traditional unease with Indians and other brown-skinned visitors.
Yet Thai culture owes so much to India: a Brahmic script, Buddhism, the Ramayana epic, many spices, etc., not to mention many Indian-derived artistic influences by way of Khmer culture (Cambodia). So I have always felt that the Thai ‘unease’ with South Asian cultures is particularly ironic.
As with so many ingrained attitudes, education is the key. Thais in rural areas, manual labourers, and Thais with lower education routinely call Indians (and other South Asians) khaek. I have heard it over and over. They rarely say it loudly and they tend to use it among themselves, never directly to an Indian person, because they know it is not a polite term. Often, they say it without even meaning to insult Indians – they seem unaware of this term’s power to hurt, how it perpetuates their sense that South Asians are “apart”, “not like us”. It’s similar to the widely used Thai term “farang”, which designates all Caucasian foreigners… also not a polite term.
Some Thais who answered your question said they have Indian friends (including, I assume, Indians born in Thailand, who speak Thai and have adopted many Thai manners, which makes them very different than the average tourist from India). They also say that they treat Indians no differently that other Thais. I believe them. But bear in mind that the great majority of Thais who participate on Quora are educated, middle-class, English-speaking and well-travelled, with an international and cosmopolitan outlook on other cultures. This makes a huge difference in their attitude to Indians.
For the majority of Thais (which is the Thai working class), salaries are low and quality education is still unaffordable. This means that the majority of Thais have either never left Thailand or have only seen bits of neighbouring countries (Laos, Malaysia, Cambodia). Culturally Thailand is still very homogenous, so most Thais simply do not have the same appreciation of diversity that, say, a New Yorker or a Londoner have. Certain parts of Bangkok are an exception, but even most Bangkok Thais have very limited interaction with foreigners (at least one-third of Bangkok’s population are migrant workers from the poorer provinces.).
I hate to contradict some of the well-meaning answers to your question, but most Thais I have met do have some level of prejudice against Indians. Don’t forget that they also have prejudices against Chinese, Laotians, Cambodians, Malays and Burmese… and don’t forget that all of those countries have their own prejudices against outsiders, just as Indians have many prejudices against non-Indians.
I will be blunt here. I believe prejudices must be openly discussed in order to be fully understood. Some prejudices even contain a grain of truth, yet over time have been exaggerated. Based on my experiences among Thais of various social classes, I would say the majority of them dislike what they see as two key aspects of Indian culture:
Indian food: Thais claim it contains acrid spices like turmeric which give Indians a strong body odour. Thais are generally quite fussy about body odour. I have often mentioned to Thais that fermented fish sauce, fermented shrimp paste and many other Thai foods are also extremely strong smelling, yet most Thais are unable to grasp the concept of cultural habituation.
The tendency of Indians (compared to Thais) to speak loudly, to bargain too aggressively when shop, and to talk down to people of lower social standing. Thai culture values gentleness and courtesy in speech and demeanor, so most Thais react negatively to anyone who argues or bargains loudly or shows open anger. I should add that many Thais also dislike those very same perceived behaviours in many Mainland Chinese visitors.
*In my many travels in India, I did notice that people in positions of relative authority – policemen, store owners, anyone with property – do indeed tend to talk down harshly to employees, and more generally to anyone who works in the service industry (drivers, labourers). Labour in India is much cheaper than in most places, so I think this creates a strong sense of impunity toward people with less power.
Having said all this…
As an Indian, you should not hesitate to go to Thailand. Do as my Indian friend did. If you are polite, patient and friendly, and if you take a fun approach to life, Thais usually open up to you quite quickly, whether you are Indian, European, Chinese or Black. Just because Thais may have some prejudices – we ALL have prejudices! – doesn’t prevent them from being able to interact with you, learn from you and perhaps even change their attitudes to people from your country.
Think of yourself as an ambassador from India to Thailand. You are bringing and embodying the best of your culture, and sharing the best of your traditions with Thais, who happen to have many cultural ties to India, whether they know it or now.
If you go there with a positive, open and humble attitude, if you are willing to set aside your own cultural biases to learn about Thai culture, I guarantee that Thais will sense it and appreciate you.
One last bit of advice: whenever possible, travel alone. If you are always stuck in a big group of Indian tourists, your identity will disappear inside your group, and Thais will never get to know you well. I think one of the worst aspects of tourism is the tendency of tourists to flock with their own people, which always means large, noisy groups that only accentuate certain national characteristics.
Bon voyage !

Rubbish. I have never had trouble in Thailand. As long as you are polite, and don’t stink up a room, they are fine. Unfortunately, I cannot say all Indians comply. I myself have seen other Indians be rude to other Asians, and a few even very wass-e-wass (stinky). So in a way I don’t blame people when they get upset.
We Indians must also learn to be polite to everyone, not just to the gora wallas (white people). Unfortunately, when some of us visit other Asian countries we have that crazy notion that we are superior to them. That must end.

No, they do not hate Indians, there are lots of them here, their religion is from India as are many of their customs and mannerisms like the wai.

Thais are some of the nicest people you’ll meet. I’ve been there dozens of times and have never had any problems.
Could it be the other way around - that our Indian brethren who are going there mistreat the Thais? I’ve seen countless Indians talk down to tax drivers, flight attendants, hotel concierges and tour guides. Some even proudly post such videos on YouTube (not going to give them publicity here).
As long as you are humble and polite, you can expect the same in kind - not just from Thais but any decent human being in general, regardless of location.
