I think that most nationalities are welcomed in China, as long as they have the skills and expertise which the Chinese businesses need. So this welcome applies as well to Russians who are skilled.

In additional to Haiyan Chen’s answer, one observation which I made in Hainan province of China is that many many Russian live there happily… Likely for retired life or regular vacation. So definitely they should not face any or much issue in China.

Had no problems in China even not disclosing my nationality and speaking English, but when I said that I’m from Moscow, Russia, the attitude became palpably better, even being good regardless. The language barrier is sometimes an issue, but if you download offline Translate dictionaries or have some other communication assistance, it’s not a problem.

There used to be a Russian sector close to the centre of Beiing, but I suspect a lot of it is gone now. Property prices have become too high.

Go to Sanya on Hainan Island in winter and it is full of Russians on holidays at the beach. There is a little Russian section with restaurants and shops.

Yes it is as per my experience. I have been to China on several business visits and also have some good friends there.

A few times I was by myself and had to navigate by myself with the language barrier. Despite this no one was rude to me. I was supposed to catch a train to Taizhou from Shanghai and I walked in to a small hotel near the train station (where I had staying earlier) but the rooms were apparently full. But a total stranger ; a girl of my about age(26–27 at the time) helped me to book a room on her app. Turns out some rooms in the same hotel were blocked by the app. She couldn’t speak a word of English but we communicated through WeChat translation. Another incident was when I went to a fruit shop in Taizhou and tried a few fruits the owner cut up a variety of local fruits and offered it to me Free of cost because it was my first time in that town and in his shop. I was surprised as this doesn’t happen in other Asian countries.

The Chinese hospitality is legendary too. When I went to my friend’s (from Uni) place in Jiaxng(90km from Shanghai) his family ; father , mother, grandparents , fiancée everyone was equally delighted to host me. My friend (and translator) from Singapore joked that everyone is nice to me because I can use chopsticks and eat anything without much qualms. But I’m sure they would have been nice despite that. No talk of business on the first day ( don’t drink pure Baiju; don’t try to be a hero). And the discussions over the next 3 days happened in different eateries which served fresh meat, fresh everything.

As a visitor of any kind you eat the local food and appreciate it you automatically double your brownie points; people are even more polite to you.

A friend of mine is an Indian Muslim married to a Shanghainese girl and has been living and working there. He denied any animosity from local people because of him being married to a local girl or him being a Muslim.

Not everyone’s experience may be as good as mine but some of my friends both Asians and westerners have had similar experiences in China.

Honestly I hope the pandemic eases down soon so I can go back to China, this time just to travel and eat.
