China backing paves way for Sri Lanka financing: IMF

WASHINGTON: China's agreement to restructure its loans to Sri Lanka paves the way for International Monetary Fund financing to the bankrupt island nation, the IMF said Tuesday, adding this would also speed up funding from others.

"Sri Lanka has now received financing assurances from all major bilateral creditors," said Krishna Srinivasan, director of IMF's Asia and Pacific Department. This allows the fund's board to approve a loan earlier agreed upon by its staff.

华盛顿：周二，IMF表示，中国同意重组对斯里兰卡的贷款，为国际货币基金组织（IMF）向这个破产岛国提供融资铺平了道路。IMF补充称，此举也将加快其他国家的融资速度。

China accounted for 10 percent of the island nation's $35 billion in foreign debt in April 2021, according to data from Sri Lanka's Department of External Resources, with Japan also accounting for about 10 percent. China is Sri Lanka's fourth-biggest lender, behind international financial markets, the Asian Development Bank and Japan. For ignorant readers, China still have a good weightage which IMF considers for decision making.
