MUMBAI: Silicon Valley Bank, a four-decade old US lender, collapsed into Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) receivership on Friday, after its long-established customer base of technology startups grew worried and yanked deposits. Receivership typically means a bank's deposits will be assumed by another, healthy bank or the FDIC will pay depositors up to the $250,000 insured limit

California banking regulators will dispose of its assets, moving quickly to protect depositors as a crisis rippled through global markets and hit banking stocks. The bank had $209 billion in assets and $175 billion in deposits as the time of failure, the FDIC said in a statement.

Like their global counterparts, in India too banking & financial stocks led the slide with BSE's banking sector and financial services indices closing around 1.8% down.

SVB failed because $91 billion worth of US govt bonds (a usually safe investment) that the bank had bought with customers’ deposits, lost some $15 billion in value due to interest rate hikes. The bank was unable to sell these low interest rate bonds that it purchased during the pandemic. Which shows the ill effects of some of the steps taken by central banks and govts during the pandemic (like reducing interest rates too much, injecting too much liquidity etc). During pandemic there was lot of pressure on Indian govt, especially from a section of economists, to print money and go overboard in pandemic relief. Good that GoI resisted that pressure and took more measured steps.

The GoI resisted that pressure and now there are no jobs in India because economy has not revived. Despite failure of one bank there are millions of jobs available in the US and 3 Lakh Indian students went to study in US last year for this very reason only. This year number of Indian students going to US will exceed 5 Lakh.

Institutional framework is in place in US to deal with bank collapse. This is a short term impact & US can deal with it. Indian economy has not revived after COVID lockdown. There are no jobs in India right now and 3 Lakh Indian students went to US last year because of that.

RBI & other regulatory authorities should be careful to avoid such disasters, though now and then we hear smaller Indian banks facing similar situations.
