A cargo train loaded with 55 containers left Beiing Thursday morning for the Russian capital Moscow, marking the launch of the first direct China-Europe freight train service from the Chinese capital. The train is expected to reach Moscow in 18 days, covering a distance of approxmately 9,000 km.

Reminds me of when China launched its Beiing to Western Europe rail freight service.

After some months it was discovered that many of the containers were empty, as Chinese companies identified that, because of government subsidies, they could make nice tidy profits by ship empty containers.

A study by two Chinese researchers found that some local governments were offering subsidies of up to US$7,500 per container

The Chinese Business Journal, a newspaper supervised by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, found that in one extreme case only one of 41 containers on a particular train actually carried goods.
