What are some of the worst issues faced by Indian women?

Over the weekend I was having a discussion with my wife regarding a few issues she faced growing up in India and this is what she had to say:

2.jpg

Scenario 1:

Born as a second girl child to a well educated parents in suburban Mumbai it was one of the happiest moments for her family and since she was born on the night of February 28th the general joke going around was that if she was born a few hours later , she would have been a “leap baby”. Apparently her grandmother had a different joke to tell altogether - “Oh no… a girl child again”.

Luckily for her and more importantly for me she had one of the most loving parents she could have asked for - not all girls are lucky that way.

Today the national average for births is 933 girls to 1,000 boys; in 1991 it was 945. India has banned pre-natal scanning to determine the sex of a baby but female infanticide is still on the rise.

Scenario 2 :

As a bright 8 year old she always stood first in her class and was way smarter than most kids her age. So when a 50 year old family friend tried to lure her with candy and tried making sexual advances towards her she remembered the talk she had with her mother a few months back on what is appropriate and what isn’t, which spared her an event that might have scarred her for life.

It is estimated over 53% of children face some form of abuse growing up in India and more often than not it is somebody within the family.

Scenario 3 :

Since she had an almost perfect academic record she was in a position to choose the best that college had to offer but with a downside- it was a 2 hour travel to the top university.

Now throughout her four year stint with college travelling in public transportation she has been leered at, teased and pushed around but one particular thing she still remembers is an instance where one over enthusiastic young man tried holding her hand with a very enticing offer “Hey baby…Chalti Kya (Want to come along)” confidently pushing aside his streaked brown hair. You could talk to any girl and I am sure they will have their own version of different unpleasant anecdotes they have heard while travelling.

According to reports, crime against a woman is committed every three minutes in India and many not reported due to social stigma in our society.

These are few of the many daily battles a woman has to endure in India and I am not talking about a woman who was born and bred in a rural environment. My wife is a highly educated and confident woman who had loving parents.

Indian women face threats to life at every stage - violence, inadequate health care, inequality, neglect, bad diet and well-being not to mention social evils like dowry and domestic abuse.

I saw a question the other day on quora which asked if you could name a great Indian woman but you don’t even have to turn your history books to find a great woman. It could be your mother, your sister or your wife who has strived hard to endure our patriarchal and misogynistic society.

True, times are changing and women of today are standing up to the social injustice but lets just hope the change is coming soon enough.

Who are you? Where are you from? Who brainwashed you?

Since time immemorial, women in India are highly respected and valued for being women.

Just like on any part of the world, some exceptions might have exsted.

However, these days, men are being treated as slaves which is as dark truth as that of newmoon night. Please click on update botton in your knowledgeware.

Is and was there ever a society where woman were slaves (more than men)?

I don’t think there were any societies in which all women were only chattel slaves in the American sense. There have certainly been societies in which the freedom and rights of women was severely restricted. The present-day Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is one. Ancient Greece was another. But the women of Saudi Arabia are not slaves. Once indoors, they can live lives of considerable luxury; they just have very little control over it.

In the modern world, more women than men are held in actual bondage because the primary function of slaves today is as prostitutes, not laborers or servants.

Do India still have slaves?

Yes, India still has slaves. We all have witnessed them or read about them but ignored them.

They have been kept hostage forcefully.

No freedom. No media coverage of their plight.

No leaders talk about. No voting right. No constitutional right.

Force to do whatever asked to do.

Some of them are forced to use drug, given injection to keep them healthy.

They have no dignity, no human right.

They are nervous but no hope to leave the work place anyhow.

They are tired of doing overwork but still has to do if someone asks.

They even don’t have right to decide their wages. The owner decides it.

They are forced to live in stinky & very dirty room.

They are forced to eat whatever their owner gives them to survive.

Constitution ends here, law ends here, Article 21 ends here.

Some of these slaves are abducted, some are sold, some are from poor family of Nepal/Bangladesh.

Yes, they are Prostitutes in different brothel of India. They are just a living coffin.

N K PRASAD

They are working for money and the question of slave doesn’t rises. A domestic woman worker demanding Rs 1000/- PM for washing the dishes in cities . Are they slaves ? A sex worker demands Rs 500/- for one hour , where is slave ?

Are women treated better in Saudi Arabia than in India?

Saudi Arabia treats women so well that they couldn’t accommodate a single woman in their conference on “women in society”.

To the contrary Indian laws actually favor women(dowry cases, rape charges) which is again wrong and should end. Laws should be sex neutral in every country.

Few incidents in Saudi Arabia which corroborate the stories of plight of women there are:

When a Girls School in Saudi Arabia caught fire in 2002, the Religious Police—the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice—beat the unveiled girls to prevent them from leaving the compound on blaze. Unveiled women must not venture out; as a result, fifteen girls were burned alive to charred bodies.

In 2007, a group of Saudi youths caught a woman with an unrelated man in a car and gang-raped her fourteen times. The Saudi Court convicted her of violating the segregation law and sentenced to six months’ jail and 200 lashes. The rapists were given light sentences of one to five years of imprisonment. When appealed, her punishment was doubled. Judge Dr. Ibrahim bin Salih al-Khudairi of the Riyadh Appeals Court later even regretted for not sentencing her to death.

A woman, shot by her husband the first and second time, rejected a Social Worker’s advice to file a complaint as it required the presence of her obligatory male guardian, her husband; without him, her testimony would not be accepted, whilst the Religious Police might accuse her of “mixng” with the opposite sex, a criminal offense. The third time her husband shot her, she died of her wounds. Our women must be protected

A woman cannot go out alone, even if veiled. She must be escorted by a male relative. The Perpetual Minors report found that Saudi women are treated as “Perpetual Minors”: they are disallowed by law to study, work, travel, marry, testify in court, legalize a contract or undergo medical treatment without the assent of a close male relative—father, husband, grandfather, brother or son.

While it is true that India has been a Patriarchal society for almost a millennium now but it is still a heaven compared to what Saudi Arabia is to women and things are changing for the good in India. Voting rights and de ocracy are the two best solutions for women empowerment as it enables women to vote and opt out a govt. discriminative of them. Saudi Arabia has neither!
