The construction of this project is being undertaken National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) which has been founded and set up in 2016, for overseeing the completion of high speed rail projects [which includes bullet trains, Vande bharat express] and other semi-high speed rail projects.

The challenging part of constructing this project is the 7 km under-sea tunnel on the Thane Creek area where the river meets the sea. From the website of NHSRCL:
Proposed high speed rail corridor will pass through Thane Creek in Mumbai. Since this area is a protected sanctuary for flamingo and nearby mangroves, rail tracks will be made undersea through a tunnel, thus ensuring no disturbance to exsting ecosystem. This tunnel will be longest rail transport and 1st undersea tunnel of India. Tunnel will be a single tube with 13.2 meters diameter to be executed by both NATM and TBM methods in different sections. An underwater static refraction technique was used for the survey work and is now completed.

NHSRCL has proposed two types of trains in this route. The first type is a “Rapid train” which will stop only at 2 stations- Surat and Vadodara. The second type is the slower type which stops at all 6 stations in the route. The “Rapid Train” would take 2 hours and 6 minites, whereas the slower train would take 2 hours and 58 minutes to complete the journey. According to NHSRCL, there are 70 daily services [35 up and 35 down] with the first service begng at 6AM and last one ending at midnight. The estimated ridership is likely to be 36000 passengers daily.

The work got delayed by Covid-19 but was resumed in 2021.
On the Gujarat side, land aquisition is mostly done and the focus is on building the piers for the elevated track. These are completed piers in the Anand district.

This project was conceptualized when LK Advani was Dy PM. It was supported by Dr MMS and later the PM NM made it his project and staked his name by resorting to laying foundation in 2017. This yet another big failure by the BJP led govt. to deliver in spite of the willing support from Japan.
