NEW DELHI: The major commodities in which India has a trade deficit with China include electronic components, computer hardware, telecom instruments, industrial machinery for dairy and organic chemicals, Parliament was informed on Wednesday.

Some of the services in which India has a trade deficit with China include construction, telecommunication, computer and information services, maintenance and repair services, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Anupriya Patel said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.

She said the commodities exhibiting trade deficit with China constituted 86.7 per cent of the total trade in 2014-15, which has reduced to 83.8 per cent of the total trade with China in 2021-22.

"Similarly, the services exhibiting trade deficit with China contributed 30.3 per cent to the total trade with China in 2014, which has reduced to 18.5 per cent in 2019," she said.

Replying to a separate question, she said India has signed 13 Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with its trading partners including the UAE, Australia and Singapore.

India's major imports from China are raw materials and production machinery as compared to finished goods. This is good as production is increasing in India. It is also a good idea to import cheaper raw materials from China. When relations with China worsen, we can reduce our imports from China this affects the Chinese economy more. While we revert to our raw materials. This is exactly what USA did when oil was cheap, they imported oil from abroad. When prices go up they increase their oil production.
Mostly all these imports from China is by the Private sector not the Indian Govt. This is a sign that the Indian economy is booming. Look at Pakistan and Sri Lanka they cannot afford any imports due to a miserable economy

Indian manufacturing is not going anywhere. Manufacturing competitively is about extremely large capital investment, lean processes and high productivity. That takes 10s of years of business investment and experience, as opposed to setting up a software business in the bathroom.

I remember the hubris of Indian institutes and industrial class in the 2000s, 2008ish when I asked in a univesity forum what about Manufacturing, and the response was: Oh we are too good for that, IT is our thing and our future, we dont need manufacturing. Bunch of clowns. Will IT make lower-middle - middle class India richer? - it wont.

Its a joke to say India will manufacture things when this will take 10s of years to happen. By that time, manufacturing would be more leaner, robotized and require even less people, (i.e less need of manual labour) unless you are talking about making trinkets and statues of gods.

Its the wrong time to get into manufacturing. Should have done it in 2000s, if not he 80s!!
