It's a long and difficult race- mainly because the core chip fab technology has been shrinking sizes amazingly and there is possibly just one leader globally in the pack.

The Tatas should carefully plan this one, because there are other interesting developments in computing, which may upend the chip business, just as the digital cameras did to film cameras over two-three decades ago. While there will always be a demand for chips, the product may get "commoditised" in a few decades.

I appreciate Tata for taking the risk and investing in India. However starting a semiconductor company is one thing but becoming a successful chip manufacturer is a whole different story. Exsting semiconductor companies have decades of R & D and hold a monopoly on the market. I hope Tata will keep at it and not shut down the business after a few years. It's hard but Tata can do it. It can start out targeting slightly older nodes (14 nm or larger) and assembly/packaging/testing. Most IOT devices, fridge, cars, appliances use older generation chips. That keeps the cost low and performance is still acceptable.
