In 1994, the Budapest Agreement was signed, according to which Ukraine, at the suggestion of the West, renouned nuclear weapons. And the West, represented by the United States and Great Britain, and Russia, acted as the guarantor of its territorial integrity. In 2014, Russia annexed the Ukrainian Crimea and Donbass, and now it is attacking Ukraine, bombing its cities and villages, and killing Ukrainians. This agreement effectively left Ukraine defenseless against Russian aggression.

I hate to break it to you, but those nuclear weapons were the property of the soviet union who's capital was Moscow. Ukraine never had ownership of those weapons or any of the soviet forces stationed in their region. What was agreed upon between the US and Russia was how to account for those weapons so they wouldn't end up in the wrong hands, and as a result, the new borders of the former soviet republics were created. The truth is that the original agreement was fraught with issues that couldn't be resolved at the time. If Ukraine wanted security from the Russians, then they should've negotiated a solid non-agression pact with Putin's administration. The current fiasco is a result of both parties refusing to coexst and being far too stubborn.
