Thai from the U.S. responding. I think the Thais respect the Vietnamese. I personally think that Vietnam would have been Thailand’s equal in terms of economic and infrastructure if wars had not torn the country apart.

Thailand does not share any direct borders with Vietnam. As a result Vietnam has not been considered “a historic enemy” of Thailand. Thailand historically has faught Burma, not Vietnam.

I live in Orange County, California which is the home to “Little Saigon” and the largest population of Vietnamese in the United States. In the U.S. Thais and Vietnamese get along very well. (I’m often mistaken for Vietnamese by Vietnamese.) Pretty much Thais and Vietnamese are brothers and sisters in the United States. We shop at the same Asian food stores. We live next to each other (my neighbor is Vietnamese). Our cultures and ways of thinking are the same. Thais and Vietnamese are more alike than they are different.

I worked with Thai people, mostly graduated and working for US invested groups. I watch over their working manner, relationship, marriage and family with kids.

To me, those Thai people have good education, focus on career ( their salary level much better than Vietnamese staff of the same position ) while still follow the traditions. They also pay much attention to sport, gym and tourism.

They covered much more distance for job, tourism … than Vietnamese.

To the eyes of a normal Vietnamese, Thais/Thailand is

A land of ladyboys (no offense but a lot of Vietnamese I know still consider Thai as having a lot of transgendered females. If you tell somebody that you are going to Thailand, chances are that people will joke about you going to change your gender).

A land of beautiful temples and pagodas.

A friendly and modern place.

A second Japan (this is just my opinion only, since there are a lot of Japanese pop culture aspects were integrated into Thai's daily life).

I’m vietnamese and I’m glad you have a positive perspective of Vietnamese people. I do agree that Vietnamese are street smart people because most vietnamese households own a small business of some kinds. I only expose to some Thai people like Metinee via TV shows.

I’ve also tried Thai cusines and i liked Thai foods alot. Very flavorful. I do want to travel to Thailand one day and learn more about your culture and all the Asian countries too

Thailand is a great place to travel. Superb shop malls. They just had their first Apple store, while we are still waiting.

Any Kpop group will come to Thailand on their tours. If they don’t go to Vietnam, the most convenient way for Vietnamese fans is to go to Thailand. Cheapest option, plus Thai fans are very hospitable as well. So BTS’s gonna go to Thailand next April on their world tour. As a BTS fan, I’m thinking of making my way there to see them for the first time.

So this is what I have collected from the comments of my compatriots on various social networking sites regarding Thailand. Disclaimer: Below are not my actual opinions nor I can confirm how popular they are.

We know their country is more developed. Their products are held in high regard. But at the same time we know it was never colonized or had to go through wars in the last century. It should be on par with Japan, but it’s not. Hence some (or many, idk because it’s hard to quantify) think they are kinda mediocre and can’t get their act together with all the political instability.

We admire them for their tourism industry. But at the same time no one thinks highly of the sex tourism thing and all the stuffs in Pattaya.

The Thais are very lucky to be living in the only ASEAN countries not invaded by the West. Vietnam got stuck in French colonisation for 80 years and the Vietnam war for another 30 years, which devastated the country. Sometimes we wish to have diplomatic policies like Thailand, a Sinophilic country with excellent alliance with the US.

泰国人非常幸运，他们生活在唯一一个未被西方入侵的东盟国家。越南被法国殖民了80年，越南战争又持续了30年，国家早已千疮百孔。有时我们希望越南也有泰国那样的外交政策，成为一个与美国结盟的亲华国家。

Thailand has a GDP per capita of 16,900 which is 2.5 times that of Vietnam’s (6,500). Although economic growth has been slowing down in Thailand and tremendously fast in Vietnam in the last decade, the gap is still there. Our medias often cite Thailand and China as benchmark for us to achieve.

On the other hand, Vietnam is the rival with Thailand regarding agricultural products such as rice, fruits, pepper etc. We are definitely not poor like Thailand’s neighbors Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, but there is still a long way to go.

Vietnam and Thailand are the two larger countries in mainland South East Asia. We both have poor, underdeveloped neighbors (Laos and Cambodia). Thailand also share border with Myanmar, which has large population but poor. In many cases only Vietnam and Thailand are mentioned when it comes to mainland ASEAN (like APEC, ASEAN six majors)

Tourism industry is very developed. The Thais are very friendly and smile all the times. Thailand is also famous for sex tourism, kathoey and sex reassignment surgery.

The Thais respect their King very much, and the same for the Buddha.

From personal interaction, it seems to be one of reluctant admiration.

Thai people acknowledge that Vietnam was a country that managed to beat the US during the Vietnam War. Some Thai people have told me that Vietnamese people are tough which is an admirable quality in a friend, but not one in a competitor.

There's an admiration for the country and its people that I don't usually hear elsewhere, but it is one that is given very, very reluctantly.
