'Maligned India's image': In 8-date trial, teen jailed for molesting Peruvian in Mumbai

MUMBAI: In one of fastest trials that took only eight hearings, the Mazgaon magistrate's court has convicted and sentenced a 19-year-old room service attendant to two years rigorous imprisonment and fined him Rs 5,000 for outraging the modesty of a Peru woman.

The court said the teen, who was accused of touching the woman's chest and neck on the night she checked into a Byculla guest house on her arrival in India on March 26, had "maligned the image of our country".

Giving the ruling on Thursday, the magistrate said the accused, Riyaz Ahmed, could not be shown leniency as the offences proved against him were against a foreigner. "He came into the room only to touch her. Now she's afraid to travel in India. His act has maligned the image of our country," the magistrate said.
