As a North Indian, it hurts me when South Indians say that Hindi is a foreign language to them despite it being the national language of India. Why don't they accept that Hindi are their own language?

The problem I understood so far with North Indians is that, they think Hindi is the only language in India. First of all it’s not the national language of India.
They are very surprised why South Indians doesn’t know Hindi. Like why? We never expect North Indians to learn our language.
I have been asked many times, why I don’t know Hindi? What am I supposed to answer to that? Sorry my parents are born in South India? It’s very embarrassing seriously.
Most of us learn Hindi in school, I learned Hindi till 12th grade, I know to read and write well. But I don’t know how to speak. I never considered Hindi as a need. I can’t talk in Hindi to survive in Kerala, Nor I can talk Hindi outside India.
We aren’t forcing you to learn our language so please stop forcing us and shaming us for the same.

As a South Indian, it hurts me when SOME North Indians like YOU,
1. Say that Hindi is our national language. Hindi is NOT our national language. Period.
2. Say that everyone from our country should know Hindi. It is OKAY to not know Hindi as it is not our mother tongue. Period.
3. Tag us as anti-Indian, if we do not know Hindi. We ARE proud Indians even if we do not know Hindi. Period.
4. Treat other languages as second class language by giving them a tag “Regional languages”. Then, Hindi is also a second class language as it is also one of the regional languages of our country. Period.
5. Forget the fact that the Indian constitution recognizes 22 official languages: Bengali, Hindi, Maithili, Nepalese, Sanskrit, Tamil, Urdu, Assamese, Dogri, Kannada, Gujarati, Bodo, Manipur (also known as Meitei), Oriya, Marathi, Santali, Telugu, Punjabi, Sindhi, Malayalam, Konkani and Kashmiri. Did you see Hindi in the list? Yes. It is also one of the official language along with other languages. Period.
6. Kill other languages in the name of giving importance to Hindi. There are many languages disappeared or spoken very less because of Hindi domination. Period.
7. Disrespect the local languages of every cities, towns and villages. RESPECT every language of our country equally. Period.
Why don't SOME North Indians accept other languages as their own language?
While I respect every other languages on earth, I cannot tolerate any kind of imposition. Hindi is a beautiful language and so are other languages. I will learn it when I need it.

I’m a pakka South Indian from southern peninsular but raised up in North and I know better Hindi than Tamil as I can read, write and speak good Hindi. I’m from Army background and can manage many languages . Now the point is I never was hesitant in talking Hindi as my only agenda was to make the other person understand and to make sure the meaning is reaching out in the same way I want to convey.
This is the basic thumb rule of any conversation.
Now I’m in Chennai from last few years and usually when I see lot of North Indian I talk in Hindi.
BUT THE TRUTH IS THESE DAYS I HOLD BACK TALKING IN HINDI AS THERE IS WRONG PRECEPTION OF HINDI BEING A NATIONAL LANGUAGE AND EVERY INDIAN TO SHOULD IT.
My only advise to all the ignorant people thinking Hindi is a national language, please know there is NO National language and it’s just official language which is used in the parliament and like wise all the regional languages are official languages of that particular state. Hope I made it clear otherwise it will sound like a Polity class .
Hindi is spoken in Couple of states but every state has regional language and slang .
know North East and south India are still part of India . Knowing and learning should be out of interest but not imposed.
No one, no state, no language is superior .

Hindi is not a foreign language and you do not seem to have the correct information. South Indians who are also Indians do not consider Hindi as a foreign language. All that they say is, Hindi is not acceptable as an either link language or a national language. As an Indian from South, it hurts me as much as the questioner to see this question.
The founding fathers of India’s independence decided that because we are a nation with multilingual communities, we cannot have a common national language. They decided that English will be the link language. But Hindi protagonists ruling Delhi decided that Hindi should be made the link language. This is ridiculous as most people in non Hindi speaking states do not know Hindi and do not wish to learn the language compulsorily. Even naming various national projects or schemes in Hindi is an insult to the non Hindi speaking people of India. If Hindi speaking people of India do not want to learn English, it is their choice and nobody can compel them. The same is true for non Hindi speaking people of India who will not accept Hindi being compelled on them.
No wonder people from Hindi speaking areas have had to suffer severe poverty as is evident from the poverty levels in most of the northern states, simply because they do not wish to learn English. English is a passport to employment not only in the corporates in India but across the world and it is no wonder that people from the southern parts of the country are there in much larger numbers in the United States and various other developed countries and they earn very well, have a much better quality of life for them and their families.
BUT LET US BE CLEAR, HINDI WILL NOT BE ACCEPTABLE AS A NATIONAL OR LINK LANGUAGE BY PEOPLE OF NON HINDI SPEAKING STATES. There are instances of MPs asking the central government to send their communication in English as they cannot understand communications sent in Hindi. Let everyone abide by the constitution which clearly says there can be no national language in the country.

I am from north east India, living in Bengaluru (Bangalore). My mother tongue is Assamese. But i can speak Hindi fluently (due to influence around and media like TV), can speak Bengali (due to friends), can manage to speak little kannada and understand it (thanks to Bengaluru).
There is no national language of India currently, Google about it before asking anyone.
India has so many ethnicities and regional languages that it's unfair to impose any on anyone.
But when you are living in a different city, it's everyone's duty to try and communicate using the local language, it shows gratitude and respect towards the locality and this helps in many ways. Knowing a new language is always advantageous. Also there are many people in the whole world who feel this way that how come you are not speaking the local language in our land, this mentality is not correct but you can't change the whole world.
Sometimes it's about just being polite and trying your best. That's what I do and have never been questioned by anyone till now why I don't know the local language. That's simply because I try to speak , whatever i can't i request politely and ask help from nearby people.
I have no right to question anyone about them not knowing Hindi. What kind of stupid attitude is that? If someone chose not to speak a language, it's fine. As humans , we communicate and for that , we just need to make ourselves understand and we understand them. We have to try ,there is no easy way out.
So please educate yourself first that there is no national language and it's not a crime to not know Hindi. It's you being too comfortable and not willing to learn new things.

This is a simple problem- YOU ARE STILL A NORTH INDIAN and not yet became a complete Indian. Change your perspective When you realize we are all Indians and all the 22 official languages practiced by citizens of this country have equal privilege and position, your problems will disappear.
