NEW DELHI: A portion of a huge dam in the Russian-controlled area of southern Ukraine has been destroyed, triggering floods and a blame game between Moscow and Kyiv over who carried out the attack, even as thousands of residents of villages located in the path of the fast-flowing water are being evacuated.

位于俄罗斯控制区的乌克兰南部一座大坝部分毁损，引发了洪水。俄罗斯和乌克兰对事件责任互相推诿，而洪水途径村庄的数千居民也正在紧急撤离。

Ukraine accused Russian forces of blowing up the Kakhovka dam and hydroelectric power station on the Dnipro River in an area that Moscow controls, while Russian officials blamed Ukrainian bombardment in the contested area. It was not possible to verify the claims.

Oleksandr Prokudin, the head of the Kherson regional military administration, said the water will reach "critical levels" within five hours.

Evacuation underway

Around 22,000 people living across 14 settlements in Ukraine's southern Kherson region are at risk of flooding, Russian-installed officials said. Another 16,000 live in the most critical zone in Ukrainian-held territory.

What happened?

Images circulating on social media on Tuesday showed a massive breach in the dam, with water already unleashed across the war zone and flooding downstream in the direction of Kherson. It is not yet clear how bad the flooding is or will be. But depending on how big the breach is, flooding could be devastating.

Why is the dam important?

The dam is a vital channel carrying water from the Dnipro to Russian-occupied Crimea peninsula, annexed by Russia in 2014, meaning water supplies there are likely to be affected. After Russia's annexation, Ukraine had blocked a channel carrying water from Nova Kakhovka, triggering a water crisis on the peninsula.
