Honduras opens China embassy after cutting ties with Taiwan

BEIG: Honduras officially opened an embassy in China on Sunday

"The relations between Honduras and China will open new opportunities and capabilities to strengthen the cooperation between both countries," Honduran Foreign Minister Enrique Reina told Chinese state media after a ceremony unveiling a plaque for the new embassy.

Honduran President X iomara Castro arrived in Shanghai on Friday for a five-day visit to cement the relationship

Castro is expected to sign a host of agreements during her visit.

Reina said earlier this month that China had already opened the door to imports of melons, shrimp, bananas and other Honduran products.

When her husband, President Mel Zelaya, was ripped from her side in the middle of the night and flown via a U.S. airbase out of Honduras, in the 2006 U.S.-backed coup d'etat, iomara did not panic, did not flee but stayed behind to lead the protests against the coup at great peril to her life.
