The monoculture reforestation is a huge problem in the United States logging business. Specifically in Oregon our forests are being clear cut and then planted with only one or a few types of trees and there had been proof that it is a forest fire hazard.

A similar program was carried out in Soviet Union, and it was successful. Though it's not the same thing exactly, because the land wasn't a desert. But many forest belts were planted to save fields from wind and erosion. Now these forests belts work well as ecosystems, there are animals, mushrooms, various plants and bushes.
