MUMBAI: The Reserve Bank of India's inter-departmental group constituted to look at the internationalisation of the rupee has suggested that in an increasingly polarised world, India should explore alternatives to the US dollar and the euro as strong forex reserves are not a sufficient defence against economic sanctions.

The group has proposed a host of measures to increase the acceptance of the rupee outside Indian borders. One of the short-term recommendations is to allow foreigners to hold rupee accounts in overseas branches. It has also recommended round-the-clock trading in the currency market and increasing the use of united payments interface (UPI) for cross-border payments.

Among the long-term measures, the working group has suggested that the rupee should be part of the International Monetary Fund's special drawing rights (SDRs) - an alternative to holding dollar reserves and currently reflect the value of the dollar, euro, renminbi, yen and British pound.

The IDG, therefore, feels that it is imperative for India to continue exploring alternatives to both the USD and the euro," the group chaired by

Earlier, RBI deputy governor T Rabi Sankar argued in favour of internationalising the rupee as this would protect India from currency volatility and reduce the cost of doing business. It would also reduce the need for holding foreign exchange reserves. He had also said that the use of the rupee would add to the bargaining power of India and make the country less vulnerable to external shocks.

Are you kidding ? Even Russia is having difficulty utilizing the Rupees that they received for payment for Oil !,India has nothing to export that Russia wants and no other country even accepts our worthless INR.

RBI should first work for capital account convertibility. When Indians are not allowed to transfer money out of India why would others want it? On the top of it, they bring draconian big brother rules like 20% TCS on international payments on indian credit cards, knowing fully well that that money has to be reclaimed as there is no expenditure tax in India. So they want to fund their deficit by forcing people to part with their earning temporarily under the garb of monitoring

Rupee outside India will be acceptable if we are excellent at manufacturing like China. China being the manufacturing hub of the world negotiated with many countries and succeeded in using their currency.

Thoigh its good idea, but to execute it practically we must have trade balance and strong exports, a huge trade deificit like china and russia, we can pay then in rupee but how arw they gona spend it back to us. So there would be a third countty willing to accept it from them, a trade balance would help in it.

Unless we develop a strong credibility of our currency, we can't think of this. And the demonetisation, done twice, has ruined the credibility. I have experienced, money changers, didn't accept the Indian Currency, saying, we don't have faith in your currency.

Unless corruption is eroded, Economy is boosted, Exports & Imports are increased supported by critical reforms that include capital account conversions with large financial institutions to manage large-scale inflow & outflow of Capital Growth, its a tough task. Lets hope all these hurdles are cleared & it’s fruitful.
