NEW DELHI: Calling for restructuring of the UN Security Council to reflect global realities, PM Narendra Modi has batted for India’s inclusion as a permanent member of the body, saying the “issue is not just about credibility, but something much larger”, and wondering how the world’s largest de ocracy and most populous country can be denied its rightful place.

Modi landed in Paris on Thursday on a two-day visit to France.

Soon after his arrival, thePM said an agreement has been reached for using India’s UPI in France and that it would start from Eiffel Tower.

抵达法国后不久，莫迪总理表示，已经就在法国使用UPI支付达成协议，并将从埃菲尔铁塔开始。

Ahead of his departure, in an interview to French newspaper ‘Les Echos’, the PM said UNSC’s “skewed membership leads to opaque decision-making process”. “In this changed world, many questions arise — are these representative of today’s world? Are they able to discharge the roles for which they were set up? Do countries...feel that these organisations matter, or are relevant... How can it claim to speak for the world when its most populous country, and its largest de ocracy, is not a permanent member,” he asked.

在他离开之前，莫迪总理在接受法国报纸《回声报》的采访时表示，联合国安理会“扭曲的成员资格导致决策过程不透明”。“在这个变化了的世界里，出现了许多问题——这些代表了今天的世界吗？他们是否能够履行他们被设定的角色？各国是否觉得这些组织很重要，或者有意义？当人口最多的国家、最大的民 主国家都不是常任理事国时，它怎么能声称代表世界发声呢？”

The UN Security Council, in particular, epitomises this dissonance. How can we talk of i t as a primary organ of a global body, when entire continents of Africa and Latin America are ignored?” the PM said. Modi counselled caution about the suggestion that “western values” have universal appeal, saying, “Philosophies from every corner of the world have to be considered... the world makes quick progress only when it learns to let go of anachronistic and outdated notions. There is one earth but not one philosophy.”

Asked about the threat from “aggressive” China, the PM reiterated India’s stand for peaceful resolution of disputes and the need to respect sovereignty of nations. “This is more important than ever for maintaining mutual trust and confidence.”

当被问及来自“咄咄逼人”的中国的威胁时，莫迪重申了印度和平解决争端的立场，以及尊重国家主权的必要性。这对维护相互信任和信心比很重要，以往任何时候都更加重要。”

Wonderful idea -few Indian tourists who use UPI at Eifel tower can be served income tax notice once they return. Regarding UNSC - imagine a country getting membership that bullies small neighbours, does cladenstine oil buying to support another bullying country and goes on arm purchasing spree from whoever when bullied by a bigger country. Feku needs to realise that there’s reason why India hasn’t been given a seat.
