NEW DELHI: After launching its about 10,000-metre deep drilling project into Earth’s crust to study internal structures in May 2023, China has initiated its second ultra-deep drilling venture this year. This time, the Chinese project aims to explore natural gas reserves at extreme depths.

The endeavor is led by China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC), which commenced drilling the Shendi Chuanke 1 Well in Sichuan province with an intended depth of 10,520 meters (approxmately 6.5 miles), as reported by X inhua News Agency.

The Kola Superdeep Borehole, situated in north-west Russia, holds the distinction of being the world's deepest man-made hole, reaching an astonishing depth of 12,262 meters

“深地川科1井”由中国石油西南油气田主导实施，设计井深10520米。该井位于四川盆地西北部剑阁潜伏构造，区域超深层叠置多套优质储层，成藏条件优越，一旦成功将有望发现新的超深层天然气增储目标区。

万米深地油气钻探是全球油气勘探领域超级工程，面临诸多世界级难题。而地处四川盆地的深地川科1井因其复杂的地质结构成为全球钻进难度最高的万米深井之一，对标全球13项工程难度指标，深地川科1井7项难度指标位居世界第一。

Digging a hole 10,000 meters (10 kilometers) down into the Earth's crust is currently not possible with exsting technology. The deepest hole ever drilled by humans, the Kola Superdeep Borehole in Russia, reached a depth of 7.5 miles (12 kilometers), but it took several decades and advanced drilling technology to achieve that depth.
