Dalits enter Tamil Nadu temple for first time in 100 years

100年来泰米尔纳德邦达利特首次进入寺庙

TIRUVANNAMALAI: After being kept out for more than 100 years, scores of Dalit families entered the Mariamman temple in Chellankuppam village, in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvannamalai district, for the first time on Wednesday. They were protected by a strong police contingent.

Police said people from other communities had not registered any protest so far. A strong police force has been deployed in the village.

The temple entry movement was sparked by fisticuffs between two youths over the issue in July that had led to a clash between Dalits and Vanniyars. The youths, a Dalit and a Vanniyar, had studied in the same school and then moved to Chennai for jobs. They had first argued on social media over the right of Dalits to enter the temple and when they met in the village, they had come to blows.

After this, Dalits submitted petitions to district revenue and police officials urging them to let them enter the temple. They declared that they would enter the temple on Wednesday, following which a large police contingent led by DIG (Vellore range) M S Muthusamy was posted in the village.

So far the Dalits had been offering prayers at a Kaliammal temple they had built in the village 30 years ago.

There is no doubt about how a temple should be a place above caste considerations. But it should not become hunting ground for other than religious matters also viz love etc in a planned manner with political support.

mariyam temple is not a high caste diety temple. usually these are temples privately owned by some family or other for their community purposes only. it is a fight between the privileged reservation groups vs non-previleged other castes. one should know the ground realities of TN which are different from the rest of the country before assuming anything.
