In terms of culture and history, Vietnam is most similar to China. Both countries have Confucian-influenced societies, a strong emphasis on family values, and a long history of Chinese influence. Both countries also have a strong agricultural tradition, and have been heavily influenced by Chinese literature, philosophy, and art.Korea and Japan, while they also have some similarities to China, have distinct cultural and historical traditions that set them apart. For example, Korea has a strong shamanistic tradition, and Japan has a unique culture that developed independently of China. Both countries have also been heavily influenced by Buddhism, which is not as prominent in China.Overall, Vietnam is the most similar country to China, but all three countries have their own unique cultural and historical traditions that set them apart.

Depends on which part of China you are referring to,
if it is Guangdong, Guangx and Yunnan in the south, it is more similar to Vietnam.
If it is Jilin, Liaoning and Shandong in the north, it is more similar to South Korea.
If it is eastern Fujian, Shanghai, and Zhejiang, it may be closer to Japan.

Traditionally, like ancient culture and society, Japan is the most similar to China I would say.
but modern society and culture, overall, it is definitely Vietnam.
But it also depends where in China.
Manchuria? Definitely more similar to Korea. (traditional culture wise)
Canton? (Hong Kong + Guangdong) Definitely more similar to Vietnam. (Literally, used to be extremely similar to Vietnam, and still is very similar in my opinion)

Hilarious question. But I’ll bite.. Nobody on this planet wants to have anything to do with Chinese. So I can confidently say that China is definitely a class of its own.

Definitely Vietnam.
Japan borrowed from China during Tang and Song dynasties, then stopped. It may be similar to China now due to both undergoing Westernization, but it’s not like Korea and Vietnam did not.
Korea borrowed from China from Tang all the way to Ming, including Song and Yuan. It stopped at Qing. Again, currently closer to China since both follow Westernization.
Vietnam borrowed from China from Han all the way to now, as opposed to Japan and Korea, which stopped. Vietnam went through the same transformation as China from Han to Tang since it was part of Chinese territory. After Vietnam became independent, the next 2 dynasties borrowed from Song. Then after Ming occupation, it borrowed heavily from Ming, then borrowed from Qing in the last dynasty. Both China and Vietnam were dominated by Western powers, underwent Co sm, civil wars, and Vietnam continues to follow the Chinese economic model to this day.
"Vietnamese still confidently believe that they have preserved the ancient tradition of China in its original state." (Yamamoto Tatsuro: History of Sino-Vietnamese Relationship, 1975)
Just an excerpt of the similarity:
(Land Reform) (1946) - Cải cách ruộng đất (Land Reform) (1953)
(Hundred Flowers Campaign) (1957) - Nhân văn Giai phẩm (Nhân Văn–Giai Phẩm Affair) (1958)
(Economic Reform) (1978) - Đổi Mới (Đổi Mới Economic Reform) (1986)
(Anti-corruption Campaign) (2012) - Nhóm lò đốt củi (Corruption Crackdown) (2017)
(Chinese Cybersecurity Law) (2016) - Luật An Ninh Mạng (Vietnamese Cybersecurity Law) (2018)
(1957)- Nhân văn Giai phẩm (Nhân Văn-Giai Phẩm Affair) (1958)

On the surface, Vietnam is most similar to China out of the three. This is due to the fact that Vietnam underwent Sinicization all the way up until the Qing Dynasty. Meanwhile, Japan visually has a culture most distinct from China due to the fact that they ended cultural exchange with China the earliest out of the other three nations of the Sinosphere. Korea is lesser than Vietnam similarly because they cut off cultural exchange with China with the fall of the Ming as Korea viewed the Manchus as a barbaric tribe of the north; and hence cut cultural exchange with them.
The Architecture, clothing, and cuisine of Vietnam is all undeniably the most similar to China’s. Vietnam’s most popular traditional dress the Ao Dai is reminiscent of Chinese Qipao. While some may argue the addition of pants was uniquely Vietnamese, the Chinese Qipao also had more contemporary renditions which had the pants. In terms of the slimming down of the silhouette, both Vietnam and China slimmed their Qipao and Ao Dai silhouettes as a result of growing influence from Western fashion. Vietnamese architecture also most closely resembled China’s as their hyper-curves and extremely ornate and gaudy maxmalist decor also takes after China’s Qing Dynasty Aesthetics.
In terms of language as well, Chinese and Vietnamese are much closer in phonetic relations than that of China and Japan’s or China and Korea’s. Indeed, Vietnamese is categorized as an Austro-asiatic language, however, their language is tonal much like Chinese which greatly set them apart from their other East Asian counterparts (Korea and Japan). Perhaps an exemplification of these similarities are seen between the Chinese dialect of Cantonese and Vietnamese. While Cantonese and Vietnamese are two distinctly different languages, to the non-native ear, one may easily confuse the phonetics of Cantonese and Vietnamese for being one another due to their phonetic similarities.
Hence, on the broad surface, I’d argue that Vietnam is the most similar to China out of the nations in the Sinosphere. The reasons for that is simply because nations in the Sinosphere act almost like a cultural snapshot of a certain Chinese Dynasty; conversely, Vietnam’s snapshot of China’s culture is the latest among the three subsequently making it the most similar to the latest version of Chinese traditional culture.

I’m a Chinese and can speak Japanese and korean. I’ve lived in japan for one year as an exchange student. My parents are korean ethnic family and I got many Vietnamese friends and have been to Vietnam for two times.
i could be sure that Vietnamese is far much closer to Chinese than the other two.
though many Vietnamese people might deny that they were influenced by Chinese
but not only historical government system, architecture and traditional costumes, from the languages and festivals, traditions to our way of judging family, career and marriage, almost everything is extremely similar
you can see that if kee away from politics, Vietnamese and Chinese are really easy to become friends.
so, although i’m chinese and China regards Vietnam as our long traditional enemy, I do really wish that someday Vietnam become a developed country with high life standard, cuz nowadays we really need some eastern Asian countries to spread ““eastern Asian” culture to the world and Vietnam is definitely the best choice
Korea is also very close to China. If Vietnam is closer to southern China culture, then Korea is affected by typical northern Chinese culture influence, though Korea also got affected by Japan.
Japan is a total different story. I’d rather regard japan as a western country with eastern Asian skin

As a Chinese my answer is: Korea is similar to Northren Chinese culture(Beiing and its surrounding area like Shandong Province); Vietnam is similar to Southern Chinese culture(HK,Guangdong province or called Canton);Japanese culture contain local accounts for more, but it is also influenced by the culture of eastern China(shanghai and its surrounding area like zhejiang, fujian province)
China is very large. Although they all speak Chinese with different accents, the cultural customs vary greatly from place to place, just like different countries in Europe.

Because of the climate and the history.
Vietnam is more similar to the south China.
Japan is more similar to the east coast of China.
Korea is more similar to northeast China.
But, they are more like an independent culture than a similar culture or a duplicated culture of China.
And for a common Chinese, to be in Japan is more like being home since they still use a few Kanji.

Although vietnam and china had a war,but I still appreciate vietnamese, I believe vietnam will eventually become a developed country
