Elon Musk thought Parag Agrawal was not the 'fire-breathing dragon' Twitter needed

NEW DELHI: One of the first things Elon Musk did after taking over Twitter — which has since been renamed X — in October 2022 was to fire several of the firm's top executives, including then-CEO Parag Agrawal.

Parag's removal didn't come as a surprise but now a new book penned by writer Walter Isaacson, who kept tabs on Musk for three years, has revealed that Musk met Parag over dinner in March 2022 -- a few months before the billionaire finalised his acquisition of Twitter -- and felt that the Indian-American executive was not the 'fire-breathing dragon' that the platform needed.

Isaacson said that Musk, after meeting Parag, felt he was a "really nice guy" but that isn't what is needed to be a CEO. Musk, as per the excerpt, thought that in order to be a CEO, one doesn't have to be liked by people. "What Twitter needs is a fire-breathing dragon. And Parag is not that," Musk said, according to Isaacson.

Since taking over X, Musk has fired thousands of employees and introduced several changes to the platform that have not been received well.

Twitter's value has also been reduced by more than 50% since Musk took over. He had bought the platform for $44 billion. However, after five months of the acquisition, the social media site's value stood at $20 billion.

After firing Parag in October, Musk acted as Twitter's CEO. In June this year, Musk stepped down from the position and appointed Linda Yaccarino to assume the role.
