The Indian government is reportedly planning to rename the country from "India" to "Bharat".

The reports were triggered by a presidential invite for the G20 dinner which described Droupadi Murmu as the "President of Bharat".

Why is the government planning such a move? What is the origin of the India vs Bharat debate?

I don't see why anyone other than anglophiles or colonial lovers would oppose this. Also, if you oppose it now you are just delaying the inevitable...10 years 50 years 100 years later changing names of "indian" constitutions would be even more complicated, so as early as better. Lol. Almost every country has two or more names depending on the language used, e.g. Germany (in English) is Deutschland in German, Egypt (in English) is Misr in Arabic. This is the norm globally. Whenever we talk in local languages we never say India, we either say Bharat or Hindustan. This is just a function of language. It's only us who are still stuck thinking colonially that we are triggered by this.

I think "India" will be renamed as "Bharat" on 8 September as "Quit India Movement" was launched on this date by Mahatma Gandhi ji to end British rule.

Renaming our country entirely with bharat will loose the name of our country India from the indian Ocean, indian subcontinent and even the Indo china region that's south east Asia which was named indo china as the region was a mixture between Indic and Chinese culture. Naming it entirely as bharat will loose this legacy and that is what china wanted. Just like India, china also have three names. And China's traditional name is zhongua. But they won't change cuz they're proud that South China sea is named after their country china. But China is already hates the name of indian Ocean and criticised because it was named after our country India. But sadly today BJP loves to fulfill the desires of China and want to abandon the name india which has so many soft power of our land

There are other problems that need to be fixed in India . But politicans are more concerned renaming India to Bharat .
