From Rs 200 to Rs 5 a kilo in a month, tomato farmers in dire straits
PUNE/KOLHAPUR/NASHIK: A crash in tomato prices from around Rs 200 a kilo a month ago to as low as Rs 3-5 has forced growers in Maharashtra to either abandon their crop or destroy their produce.
Prices slumped after a bumper yield sparked a tomato avalanche, catching unawares everyone involved in the sector.
"A minimum support price (MSP) for tomato and onion is the only way forward to prevent this kind of market fluctuations," said agriculture activist Sachin Holkar from Nashik.
The few farmers who managed to sell their produce, albeit at throwaway prices, said they weren't able to recover even half of their investment. A farmer needs Rs 2 lakh in capital to grow tomato on a one-acre plot.
In Pune, prices have dropped to Rs 5 a kilo in the market. In Nashik, average wholesale tomato prices have plunged in the past six weeks from Rs 2,000 a crate (20kg) to Rs 90 at the three wholesale mandis in Pimpalgaon, Nashik and Lasalgaon.
In Kolhapur, tomatoes are being sold at Rs 2-3 a kilo in retail markets from around Rs 220 around a month ago.
Farmers in Junnar and Ambegaon tehsils in Pune district started abandoning tomato plantations the moment prices dipped in the wholesale markets over the last few weeks.
Around 2 lakh crates of tomatoes are being auctioned daily at Pimpalgaon APMC, the largest wholesale tomato market in Maharashtra.

Farmers in India are like.... ZERO taxes when they earn millions due to surge pricing... get easy subsidy or direct cash transfer when running into losses.... how fair is that for service class who get NOTHING when they lose their job????

The Farm Bills would've avoided such price shocks by introducing cold storage facility. But no for a few people whatever Modi does is wrong only for Ambani and Adani.

they didn't pay any taxes when they earned bumper profits at higher prices ...they didn't support reform laws when Government passed those..so all profits are theirs and all losses should be compensated by Government... unfortunately that's the sorry story of farmers turning into parasites.....

The fact is when prices were manipulated towards higher side, these same farmers became millionaires overnight. Now if prices have come down they should not become all cry babies.
Instead of destroying the crops they could há e donated it to some organizations serving food to homeless and people below poverty line.
But instead their selfishness is so deep that they prefer to destroy crops and want government to pay for their losses and waive their loans. When they make millions do they pay taxes??
These types are no different from money lenders or leeches.

Its simple, since the prices went so high that most of the farmers planted tomatoes and hence the price came down since the market is based on demand and supply

if minimum support price is fixed for any product, then, maxmum price for the same should also be fixed kee the consumers in view.

Farmer laws were a boon and praised by Biden as well..........But stupid farmers got fooled by INDIA frauds led by a cunning Italian Sonia and chamcha Kejriwal

Why not export it to international market where they can still fetch a premium? Of course, robust storage solutions should exst for that to happen - one goal of the now pulled back Farm Laws last year. So blame your Punjabi bretheren for that! And remember to not sit on your hands and watch idly when such anti-national elements spring into action.

Do you know the shelf life of tomatoes? Do you have an example trade route of tomatoes? Or just blabbering?

If farmers had stood up to support the farm reform bills then such situations won’t have occurred.

Why just Minimum Support Price then there should be Maxmum Price also fixed to avoid any foul play by either the farmers or traders or middlemen etc. as well???

Those politicians and farmers unions who forced the Govt. to withdraw the farm laws must come forward to help these unfortunate farmers. Opposition political parties and vested interest groups have ruined the lives of poor marginal and small farmers in our country. This is the result of mocking and protesting the Govt. farm laws.

Nobody complained when prices were 200, why complain now?
If you want MSP to protect your interest then their should be a higher limit too.

if there is a minimum price, there should be a maxmum price too.

Tomatoes at Re/200/kg were Modi's fault and at Re./5/kg is also his fault.

Farmers should act like entrepreneur. They can form cooperatives and use the produce in times of glut to process tomatoes into jams, purees etc. Prices for packaged items are almost constant.

Where are "Tomato Politicians" now ? Can they be able to provide price support to farmers, selling their produce in loss ?

These greedy farmers get subsidized Fertilizers, seeds, electricity and minimum price guarantee but still forever play victim card. Paid media publish news in their favour in return for crrores of rs. Real victim are we the common people. Farmers are looting us

when the Government wanted to address the issue by bringing in farm bill they protested in it to save the middleman, now all the opposition are silent and whispering of MSP, which is bad for any economy. the farm leaders were creating all fake narratives at that time from their luxurious tents and poor farmers have to face the difficulties now.

These farmers went for tomato famring seeing the 200 Rs price in market. now the bumper crop has runied their dreams & cribing for govt support. Why they sold the crop at higher prices & never thought of common man. Now no one will support them to get min support prices. If at all govt thinks of min support price then they should levy max sell price of all crops.
